Abstract

217,406. Hampden, G. C. E., and Stokes, Sir F. W. S. May 18, 1923. Outdoor games.-An awning for use on courts and like pleasure grounds consists of a bridge member B spanning the court and adapted to be traversed along rails A at each side from one end of the court to the other and to carry wires or cords C which are subsequently strained and carry the awning. In the preferred form two bridge members B one at each end are adapted to move towards the centre of the court, the cords C passing over pulleys D<2> and attached at their ends to the bridge members and to pulleys D. Locking levers E operated through gearing and a cross shaft lock the bridge members together and at the same time tension the wires. The flexible cover G is supported by the bridge members when collapsed, and after the wires are tensioned, is drawn along them to cover the court. End and centering pieces are also provided. The bridge members are operated by ropes or cords from a motor or by hand.
