Abstract

Extincteurs or chemical fire - extinguishers; fi r e - extinguishing by solutions or liquid mixtures. - A portable fire extinguisher is converbed into a foam fire extinguisher by fitting over the nozzle a headpiece containing foamforming chemicals. The extinguisher may contain a solution of an acid salt or an acid, such as aluminium sulphate or oxalic acid and foam-generating substance such as saponin, and the head-piece then contains a gasdeveloping substance such as an alkali carbonate or bicarbonate in powder form; or this arrangement of the chemicals may be reversed. The extinguisher may contain water and the head-piece all the chemicals for producing foam. A container d for chemicals is screwed on to the nozzle of a fire extinguisher by a sleeve c which holds a shell b against a packing ring f by a tube e. The liquid from the extinguisher passes by the tubes n through the chemicals, generating foam which passes through the open top of the container d and through openings i into the tube e. A sleeve g on the container d and wire gauze h around the tube. e are provided. A tube o frictionally engaging the head-piece serves to support it when not n use.
