Abstract

Power hammers.-A pump-piston hammer has a control valve which consists of a series of lollow pistons arranged in two groups connected hy a rod s to move together. The valve may occupy five distinct positions, in the first of which the spaces c, e below the ram and pump pistons a, d are connected by passages 1, 11, 3 and those b, f above by 2, 21, 4 so that a series of strong blows is struck. In position II the space b is exhausted through ports 4, 21, the space f is connected to a reservoir p through ports 2, 23, l, 7, Fig. 2, and space e through ports 1, i, 12, 13, non-return valve 14 and ports 15, 8<1>, 3 with the space c so that the ram is held up. If the valve is between positions I and II a series of weak blows will be struck. In position III spaces e, f are connected by ports 2, 6, g, 5, 12, 1 and by ports 10, 7 to the reservoir so that the ram falls into its lowest position and any high pressure in the reservoir is vented. In position IV. Fig. 4, air from the space f is forced through ports 2, 22, 6, g, 5, 13, non-return valve 14, and ports 16, 8<1>, 3 to space c and thus lifts the ram and from the space e through ports 1, 11, 10, 17, non-return valve 18 into the reservoir p. In position V. space f is connected to the enlarged passage g, the space e still supplies the reservoir but the space c is exhausted' through ports 3, 8 and space b connected to the reservoir by ports 7, l and 4 so that a single blow is struck. In a modification the air is compressed into the reservoir in two stages. This is done by omitting the valve 18 and connecting the port 10 by a passage z, Fig. 7, to a cooling coil r<1>, valve v<2>, and a space e' above the reduced end of the piston d which forces the air througn a valve v<1> and pipe r<2> to the reservoir p. If the pressure in the reservoir becomes excessive it forces back a spring valve b<1> thereby connecting the space e, Fig. 1, or e<1>, Fig. 7, with an additional space v and thus limiting the compression.
