Mercury and other conducting iiquid switches. -A tiltable apparatus comprises one or more solid resistance bodies 2, 3, 4, Figs. 2 and 2<a>, a chamber 7 containing mercury, and passages 12, 22 through which the mercury flows, gradually reducing the resistances and finally short-circuiting them through metal caps 80. The triple resistance apparatus shown is adapted for use with a three-phase motor, the leads being attached to terminals 5, 6, 15. Resistance bodies of conical or other shapes may be employed. An exterior disconnecting switch may be attached to the tiltable apparatus. Salt solution may be used as the conducting liquid.
