Abstract
214,707. Nichols, H. J. Jan. 22, 1923. Projectile fuzes.-A fuze adapted to function only on impact with water comprises a sleeve 7 and a piston 16, one of these members carrying the percussion cap 20, and the other the firing pin 26. The front face 28 of the piston 16 is cup-shaped with a central projection 27 in line with a hole 17 in the end 19 of the sleeve 7. The plunger and the sleeve are held in the safe position, shown, by springs 30, 31. When the fuze strikes water, the water rushes through a hole 11 in the nose of the fuze and through the hcle 17, and strikes the front face of the piston 16. Owing to the configuration of this face the water jet is deflected and thrust forward against the front wall 19 of the sleeve 7. The combined movement of the piston backwards and the sleeve forwards causes the firing pin to strike the percussion cap. The latter is secured in its recess by a perforated screw plug 21 followed by an ignition charge 23 covered by an ignition disc 29. A detachable screw plug for the hole 11 is shown.
