Weft inserters not carrying bobbins, cops, and the like, looms with.-The weft from a stationary cop &c. 62, Fig. 1, is passed through a slot in a main " shuttle " or weft-inserter 5 which is picked across a main lay 1 from a - shuttle box 3 into a shuttle box 4. The loop of weft inserted by the " shuttle " passes the selvedge-forming or locking thread from an auxiliary shuttle 12, which has just been picked from a shuttle box 10 to a shuttle box 11 across a shuttle rail 8 at right angles to the lay. The lay now beats up and the loop 61 of weft is engaged and spread by projections 57 on the shuttle box 10, so that when the auxiliary shuttle is picked back into the box 10, the selvedge thread passes between the upper and lower threads in the loop, ande when the lay retires and the main " shuttle " is picked back into the box 3, the loop is held at the selvedge. The lay finally beats up agais. The selvedge-shuttle 12, Figs. 1, 2. and 3, which is provided with a pirn furnished with a disc 14 acted upon by an adjustable braking-spring 15, and with thread eyelets 16, 17, 18 is picked by members 10 actuated by spring-controlled picking-rods 21, 22. These are moved by members 58, 59 on the lay into position to be engaged by spring-controlled locking-catches 29, 30, which are released by chains 34, 49 connected to camcontrolled levers to enable a spring 26 to effect the picking. The boxes 10, 11 are slotted at one side to receive blocks carried by blade springs 55 for holding resiliently the auxiliary shuttle in the boxes. The main " shuttle '- has a slot extending through its total height and substantially its total length and arranged near the front of the shuttle.
