Pile, cutting; stop-motions.-In power-driven pile-cutting machines the driving and drag rollers for the fabric are operated through a differential gear device, abnormal movement of the knifeholder controlling braking-devices mechanically to alter the speed ratio in the differential gear. As shown, the driving-pulley e, Fig. 1, is geared through a differential gear-box to shafts v, u, i. The shafts v, u are connected by bevel gearing to the shafts of the drag and driving rollers b, c, Fig. 3, respectively. The shaft i, and the shaft y of the drag roller b carry brake-drums k, z adapted to be engaged by brake-shoes 1, 3 controlled by lever and cam mechanism by a link 10, the brake being applied to one drum as the pressure of the other brake-shoe is removed from the other drum. When the brake-shoe 1 is raised out of contact with the drum k, the drag roller b ceases to rotate. This is effected by connecting the link 10 by chain and lever mechanism 14, 15, 13, 12, 16 to a lever 17 connected to the knife-holder 24. When the knife-holder moves either to the right or left, the link 10 is moved to the left and the machine is stopped. The lever 12 may be controlled by hand. An additional brake-drum may be provided on the driving-roller c.
