Abstract

170,211. McNeil, C. Nov. 20, 1920. Roller mills.-In a sugar-cane or like mill fed by a conveyer, a variable-speed means is provided for driving the conveyer and means for varying the speed of the conveyer in accordance with the movements of the movable roll of the pair of rolls fed by the conveyer. The housing, bearing, or other part moving with the movable roll is operatively connected through links and levers or equivalent mechanism with the means controlling the speed of the conveyer, so that as the movable roll moves away from the fixed roll the speed of the conveyer is reduced, and vice versa. The housing &c. may be connected to the throttle valve of a steam-engine or to the controller of a variable-speed electric motor driving the conveyer, or to the speed-controlling gear of any form of variable-speed gear through which the conveyer is driven. As shown, a lever A is pivoted on the housing of the mill and the shorter arm is engaged by a pin B on the bearing-block of the upper and movable roll C, while the longer arm is connected to a chain D which passes over a pulley E and is connected to a weighted bellcrank lever F. A lever J on the shaft G of the lever F is connected to speed-varying mechanism controlling the speed of a conveyer which delivers the cane on to a shoot K. In a modification,. the lever A is adjustably connected to a link secured to the lower lever F.
