668,084. Drawing wire. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. Dec. 21, 1948 [Dec. 22, 1947], No. 32985/48. Class 83 (iv). Automatic stop means for a wire-drawing machine having a series of dies 6 and associated motor-driven drums 1 comprises rotatable means arranged adjacent the first drum and driven by the travel of the wire and a speed switch 16 connected to the rotatable means so that it cuts off the supply of current to the motors on breakage of the wire. Immediately preceding each die 6, the wire is guided by a sheave 15, or a pair of pinch rolls 17 and 18, and the sheave or one of the pinch rolls is connected by gearing 24, 23 to a rotary disc 19 in a fluid-filled housing 21. During normal operation, the drag of the fluid causes disc 19 to rotate another disc 20 against the action of a spring until a lug 25 closes contacts 26 that operate a relay 28 to close the driving motor circuit. If the wire should break, the spring rotates the disc 20 in the opposite direction and opens the contacts 26, so stopping the entire machine. In a modification electromagnets may be fitted on the disc 19 to take the place of the fluid drive. The wire-drawing machine illustrated has tension-controlling arms 10a which control the speeds of the individual motors for each drum, as described in Specification 555,933.
