Description

SPECIFICATION Thermal-insulating covering element for walls and ceilings The present invention is concerned with a thermal-insulating covering element for walls and ceilings which consists essentially of a heat-insulating fundamental body provided with a covering layer.
Known covering elements include, for example, tongue and grooved panels made from a large variety of different woods, these panels being nailed directly on to previously fixed wooden laths or being nailed on by means of concealed fixing fastenings. Such panels are used not only as facade coverings or claddings but also for internal coverings or claddings.
Recently, profiled or otherwise finished metal sheets and especially those of aluminium sheet have been used to an ever-increas- ing extent for covering or cladding facades.
However, these sheet metal coverings, under which can be provided heat-insulating synthetic resin foams, suffer from several disadvantages of which may be particularly mentioned the complicated underneath construction for mounting the covering elements, as well as, in some cases, unsatisfactory visual and joint transitions from one element to another.
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a covering element which, without having a complicated underconstruction, can be applied in a simple manner to surfaces to be covered and, after mounting, gives a panel-like covered surface, the transitions of which do not permit the recognition of butt joints, and fulfils the desired requirements with regard to jointing.
Thus, according to the present invention, there is provided a thermal-insulating covering element with associated fixing fastenings for walls and ceilings, said thermal-insulating covering element consisting essentially of a heat-insulating fundamental body provided with a covering layer, wherein (a) one longitudinal side of the covering layer projects as a tongue over the upper part of the fundamental body and the other longitudinal side is formed as a slot-like groove corresponding to the tongue, (b) the height of the slot-like groove is smaller than the thickness of the head of the fixing fastening upturned over the tongue, (c) the depth of the slot-like groove is greater than the breadth of the tongue together with the fixing fastening upturned over the tongue, and (d) the part of the heat-insulating fundamental body present under the slot-like groove and the tongue is so constructed that, after fixing to a wall or ceiling, a continuous heatinsulating fundamental layer is obtained.
The fundamental body consists of a heatinsulating material and preferably of one which, by mechanical working methods, can be adapted to the particular desired shape of the fundamental body. Especially preferred for this purpose are synthetic resin foams and mineral fibre mats impregnated with binding agents. Of the synthetic resin foams, those based on polystyrene or on a similar basis and those based on polyurethane are especially preferred. The especially preferred synthetic resin foams include the polyurethane hard foams which can be produced with a large variety of densities.
If necessary, it is possible to provide the foamed materials with flame-retarding additives or to make them from starting materials which have a flame-retarding or flame-inhibiting action. Furthermore, these foamed materials can contain considerable amounts of filling materials, be they based upon finelydivided mineral filling materials or be they in the form of wood meal, which results, for example, in an increase of the compressive strength. It is also possible to use those systems in the case of which, in the polymer formation, different reactions run in parallel, for example a polyurethane formation and a polyester formation with a simultaneous linking of both systems by using unsaturated polyesters having terminal hydroxyl groups participating in both reactions. The processes for the production of these products and especially of the polyurethane hard foamed materials are well known. Thus, for example, with regard to the production of polyurethane hard foamed materials, reference is made to the Kunststoffbuch, Volume VII, Polyurethane, by Vieweg/Höchtlen (pub. Karl Hanser-Verlag, Miinchen, 1966).
In the case of the use of polyurethane hard foamed material, the covering elements according to the invention preferably have a sandwich construction, which is also known as a light core composite construction. Profiles, plates and three-dimensional bodies comprising a firm, preferably thin upper covering layer and a thin underlayer, which are firmly bonded to a specific light core layer and are supported by this over a large surface area, are referred to as sandwich constructions. The supporting ability of the light material core depends upon its density and upon its bonding with the covering layer.
The covering layer can consist of any desired metallic material and, according to taste, can be profiled or non-profiled. The covering layer can, of course, also be finished in some other way, for example it can have the appearance of wood or can be provided with weather-resistant stove enamellings. For facade coverings, according to the present invention, those covering elements are preferably used in which the covering layers consist of metal sheets and especially of shiny, matt or stove-enamelled steel or aluminium sheets or, for especially exclusive fields of use, of bright copper sheets. The sheets preferably have a thickness of 0.5 to 0.7 mm.Of course, according to the present invention, it is also possible additionally to apply to the covering layer a decorative layer of other materials, for example a wood or synthetic resin veneer which can have a wide variety of wood grainings.
The thin underlayer can consist of any de sired material, for example of waxed paper, but preferably consists of an aluminium foil and especially of "silver paper", the paper side thereby being bonded with the funda mental body since the additional advantage is hereby provided that the outwardly present aluminium foil reflects back heat. The thin underlayer is preferably present when the fun damental body consists of a polyurethane hard foam. Apart from the strengthening effect, this is especially for production reasons.
The thin underlayer can, for example, be omitted if the fundamental body consists of foamed polystyrene or of foamed polyethyl ene.
For the production of the covering elements according to the present invention which, for example, have a core of polyurethane hard foamed material and, as upper layer, have a thin metal sheet, there can be employed a continuous method of production in which a metal sheet for the upper covering layer, running off from a roll, is brought into the desired shape by means of a profile roller and this then passed, with the simultaneous introduction of the component mixture necessary for the polyurethane hard foam formation and of a "silver paper" strip as lower covering layer"through a channel corresponding to the desired shape, formed by four continuously running bands, the product emerging from the channel subsequently being provided with the desired stepped edges on the longitudinal sides by milling off and then being cut up into the desired length.
However, the production of the covering elements according to the present invention preferably takes place in a manner such that the fundamental body is first produced continuously or discontinuously as board of the desired breadth and thickness and then on the longitudinal sides are milled to give stepped edges or corresponding combination possibilities and recesses for the slot-like grooves and the corresponding drops and possibly backaeration canals running under the covering layer, whereafter appropriate, previously shaped sheet metal profiles are stuck on to the so obtained fundamental body.
In the case of this process and of the previously described continuous process, it is recommended first to clean or roughen, for example by sand blasting, the covering layer on the side which comes into contact with the fundamental body. Furthermore, it can be recommendable, instead of the sand blasting treatment, to apply an adhesive agent or, after the sand blasting treatment, additionally to apply an adhesive agent. The adhesive agents employed for this purpose are well known so that it is not necessary to describe these adhesive agents in detail.
The covering elements produced in this way, which are used directly as wall and ceiling coverings and claddings, can, however, also be used for the production of freestanding inner and outer walls. For this purpose, two covering elements are stuck together mirror-like on their lower sides so that wall elements are obtained which are provided with the covering layer on both of their outer sides. Before sticking together, it is advantageous to mill on the subsequent inner side of one of the covering elements, installation slits running vertically and horizontally to one another into which, in the case of the mounting of the wall, electric leads or other thin supply leads can be simultaneously placed.
In the following, the present invention will be explained with reference to Figs. 1 to 8 of the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an especially preferred embodiment of the present invention. All the details not specifically mentioned in the description but which can be seen from the drawings belong to the disclosure of the present invention.
In the Figures of the accompanying drawings and in the related description, the references have the following meanings: 1 fundamental body 2 covering layer 3 longitudinal side 4 tongue 5 longitudinal side 6 slot-like groove 7 head of the fixing fastening 8 8 fixing fastening 8a fixing fastening 9 upper part of the slot-like groove 6 10 drop of the covering layer 2 11 stepped edge 11 a stepped edge corresponding to 11 1 2 upper part of the stepped edge 11 1 3 lower part of the stepped edge 11 14 lower side of the fundamental body 1 1 5 down-angling of the covering layer 2 (= second drop) 1 6 rear aeration canals 1 7 suspension rods or suspension cords 1 8 wing of the fixing fastening 8a 1 9 vertical installation opening 1 9a horizontal installation opening b breadth of the tongue 4 d thickness of the head 7 h height of the slot-like groove 6 t depth of the slot-like groove 6 Figure 1 shows a perspective illustration of the start of two covering elements arranged next to one another, together with a fixing fastening 8 in the case of which a drop 10 of a tongue 4 is two-stepped; the covering element and the fixing fastening being illustrated almost in the ratio of 1:1; Figure 2 shows an enlarged cross-section of the slot-like groove 6 of one covering element in which the downwardly angled tongue 4 of the other covering element is present, together with the head 7 of the fixing fastening 8 formed tongue-like according to the present invention and somewhat pressed together; Figure 3 is a perspective illustration of the start of several covering elements arranged next to one another, in which the drop 10 is only one-stepped, and which have rear aeration canals under the covering layer 2;; Figure 4 shows an enlarged cross-section of the slot-like groove 6 of one of the covering elements in which is present the non-additionally downwardly angled tongue 4 of the other covering element, together with the spririg-like constructed head 7 of the fixing fastening 8; Figure 5 is a cross-section of a roof construction with a suspended ceiling which consists of covering elements according to the present invention arranged next to one another which are connected with the roof construction by means of fixing fastenings 8a via suspension rods or suspension cords 17; Figure 6 shows in perspective illustration, from the place marked with A in Fig. 5, the fixing fastening 8a according to the present invention which is provided with known wings 1 8 which make it possible to position the fixing fastening at any desired height;; Figure 7 shows in cross-section a part of a wall which consists of double elements arranged next to one another which have been produced by sticking together two covering elements; and Figure 8 is a perspective illustration of a wall of double elements according to Fig. 7 arranged side by side.
More specifically, with regard to Figs. 1 to 8, the following is also to be stated: In Fig. 1, there can clearly be seen, in combination with Fig. 2, how the upper part 9 of the slot-like groove 6 projects over the fundamental body 1, i.e. over the upper part of the stepped edge 1 a, and only after the downward angling 1 5 does it come to lie on the covering layer 2 of the other covering element.By means of the downward angling 1 5 of the covering layer 2, which then passes over into the tongue 4, the tongue 4 is arranged in the middle of the slot-like groove 6 and is firmly held in this position by the fixing fastening 8, the head 7 of which is, before insertion into the slot-like groove 6, somewhat thicker than the height of the slotlike groove 6, since the spring-like head 7, in the case of the slipping over on to the tongue 4, additionally becomes somewhat thicker but then, in the case of the pushing up of the slotlike groove 6, is firmly pressed together.Due to the spring-like construction of the head 7 of the fixing fastening 8, which, according to the present invention, represents an important combination feature together with the covering element according to the present invention, it thus results in a firm pressure seating of the upper part 9 of the slot-like groove 6 on the covering layer 2 of the other covering element. A further very important feature according to the present invention is, furthermore, the fact that the tongue 4, together with the fixing fastenings 8 according to the present invention, do not come to abut at the end of the slot-like groove 6.Sufficient play is thereby provided in order to ensure that the side surfaces 3, 5, which preferably have the form of corresponding stepped edges 11, 11 a or of wedge edges, come to lie close to one another after the assembly of the covering elements and thus give a truly continuous, heat-insulating fundamental layer of the fundamental bodies 1. Furthermore, this arrangement fulfils the function of an expansion joint so that in this regard, too, no effects are obtained.
Due to the above-described pressure seating by means of the fixing fastenings 8 according to the present invention, as well as due to the close lying together of the fundamental bodies 1, the covering elements according to the present invention are firmly positioned with regard to one another so that, for example, in the case of a facade covering, even in the case of very strong wind influences, it does not give rise to any kind of noise. In this regard, it is to be noted that the head 7 of the fixing fastening 8 according to the present invention, which is preferably constructed as a mechanical spring, can also have a U-shaped construction which then, for the achievement of a spring action, is covered with a rubber elastic material. The covering of such a Ushaped head 7 of the fixing fastening 8 can take place, for example, by means of a known dipping process.
Due to the preferred feature according to which the upper part 9 of the slot-like groove 6 projects over the upper part of the stepped edge 11 a and thus, after the downward angle 15, comes to lie against the covering layer 2 of the other covering element, there is provided the further advantage that, in the case of a large surface area covering with the help of the covering elements according to the present invention, no butt joints are visible.
According to a further preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the edge present on the lower part of the slot-like groove 6 is somewhate arcuately bent downward. In the case of the mounting of the covering elements according to the present invention, there is thereby provided the advantage that the slot-like groove 6 of one covering element can be pushed without difficulty on to the tongue 4 of the other covering element, provided with the fixing fastening 8 which, by means of the fixing fastening 8, is fixed, for example, on a wall.
The combination of the construction according to the present invention of slot-like groove 6 and tongue 4, on the one hand, with the fixing fastenings 8 according to the present invention, on the other hand, thus represents an important feature of the present invention.
In the case of the covering element illustrated in Fig. 1, the longitudinal sides 3, 5 have the preferred stepped edges 11 or 11 a.
The shape of the fixing fastening 8 is adapted to the stepped edge 11. The foot bent at right-angles to the lower part 1 3 of the stepped edge 11 is provided with a hole through which passes a fixing means, for example, a screw. In the case of the suspended ceiling illustrated in Fig. 5, the foot of the fixing fastening 8a runs, as illustrated in Fig. 6, in the same plane as the longitudinal side of the lower part 1 3 of the stepped edge 11. The "foot", which thereby becomes the "head", is provided, in known manner, with two wings, each of which has a hole through which passes a suspension rod or suspension cord 1 7. By means of these wings, the particular desired height can then be adjusted or a levelling of the height can be achieved by simple displacement.
The fixing fastenings 8 or 8a are applied, for example, at distances apart of 50 cm.
The covering element illustrated in Fig. 1 preferably has a raster measurement of 21.5 cm. Of this, about 18 cm. are on the main surface and about 3.5 cm. on the surface after the drop 10. In this case, the drop 10 is 7 mm. and the second drop, i.e. the downward angle 15, is 1 mm. The fundamental body 1 has, in the thickest place, a thickness of preferably 6 cm. but any desired thickness can be selected, according to requirements.
The length of the covering elements can also have any desired, practicable length but preferably have a length of 2.5 to 5 m.
Fig. 3 illustrates an embodiment according to the present invention in which the covering layer 2, after the first drop 10, passes over without the second drop, i.e. the downward angling 15, into the tongue 4. In this case, it is advantageous when the first drop 10 is somewhat deeper than that illustrated in Fig.
1 in order that, in this case, too, the tongue 4 is arranged centrally in the slot-like groove 6 and, by means of the fixing fastenings 8 according to the present invention, can be positioned without difficulty and, nevertheless, firmly but the upper part 9 of the slot-like groove 6 does not come to lie on the covering layer 2 of the first drop 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4.
A further explanation of Figs. 5 and 6 is not necessary since these drawings are self-explanatory.
Fig. 7 shows two covering elements according to the present invention which are so stuck together in mirror-like manner that the covering layers 2 form the outer layers of the wall elements formed. Before sticking together, in the case of the lower covering element there were milled in, parallel to the longitudinal side 3, in the upper part the recess 1 9 and at right-angles thereto, at distances apart, the recesses 1 9a running parallel to one another which then, after the sticking together, give the hollow spaces or installation passages 19, 1 9a, which can also be seen in Fig. 8.
Apart from a good visual effect and a good fit between the covering elements arranged side by side, the covering elements illustrated in the accompanying drawings also have the following advantages: (a) They have a low weight.
(b) In the case of transport and in the case of application to external walls to be covered, they are easy to handle.
(c) They can be applied in a simple manner to the surfaces to be covered, especially on external walls, by means of the fixing fastenings according to the present invention.
(d) They easily take up the stresses and forces which are caused by temperature variations occurring on the facade.
(e) By careful selection of the adhesive agent, there is no danger that, due to the temperatures rising by sun radiation, the upper covering layer becomes detached from the fundamental body.
(f) Due to the fundamental body, a thermal insulation is provided which satisfies the requirements for residential buildings in all temperature zones. An additional heat insulation, which must be provided in the case of the usual facades of aluminium sheet, in combination with the complicated underlying construction, is thus unnecessary.
(g) The sandwich construction of steel, aluminium or copper sheet and the fundamental body, for example of polyurethane hard foamed material, is completely water-tight and resistant to almost all environmental influences which may arise. If desired, the cut surfaces which are formed by cutting the length of the individual panels can be sealed in known manner, for example with a solventfree lacquer.
(h) Due to the fundamental body employed, the upper covering layer has a stable back filling so that relatively thin metal sheets can be used without danger.
(i) Due to the use of relatively thin metal sheets, these covering elements can be produced very economically and cheaply.
