Abstract

Ventilating mines; air, treating; forced ventilation. - Mines are ventilated by utilizing the heat derived from condensation of exhaust steam from mine engines to produce an upward flow of air in the upcast shaft. As shown, the exhaust steam from a jig conveyer engine a is carried by a pipe c to a radiator d, of known type, arranged in the upcast b, the heat liberated by the condensation of the steam producing an updraught in the shaft b. The condensate discharges into a sump f and the pipe c is fitted with a valvecontrolled nozzle g through which steam may be injected into the air coLumn to maintain the desired degree of humidity and also to impart a further upward drive. The lower part of the Figure shows an arrangement in which steam from a pump engine h is conveyed to a radiator l arranged in an air-way m, the necessary suction being maintained by an air pump n and a pump o being provided for discharging the condensate. In a further modification, the exhaust steam from a pump engine is passed through a water-cooled condenser and the cooling water is circulated by a pump through the radiator. Fans may be used to assist the ventilation. In cases where the exhaust steam is utilized for other purposes, the regular part of the supply is used for that purpose and the "peak" current for heating the radiators.
