Class 58 [Also in Groups XII and XIII] In an apparatus for pretreating grain comprising in subjacent relation a preheating zone A, a drying zone B and a cooling zone C and heat exchangers 4 in the preheating zone for conveying the heat content of the damp blast issuing from the drying zone to the goods to be treated, means 15 are provided for producing a veil of water through which the damp blast passes after its exit from the drying zone and prior to its entry into the heat exchangers and an air heater respectively in order to clean the blast of impurities. As shown, warmed air from the cooling zone C or air warmed by an air heater (not shown, but arranged in the channel at the left of the heat exchanger 4 in Fig. 1) is drawn by a fan 8 into the drying zone B through a series of open bottomed ducts 6 the air filling the zone and being extracted through similar ducts 5, 7, into a side chamber 9 where it is passed through a veil of water, warmed to a temperature above that of the air in - tank 16 from which it is pumped to a header 15 the cleaned air then passing up the chamber 9 and through the preheating zone A where it is freed from moisture before passing into the drying zone or byepassing the preheating zone if the flap 9<SP>1</SP> is open and passing on to the fan 8 and blast heater or to atmosphere. Cold air is blown into a series of open based ducts 11 in the cooling zone and after cooling the goods the now warmed air is exhausted through similar ducts 10, 12, and passed to the fan 8 or to atmosphere.
