Abstract

A control device is connected to the top opening of a beer barrel (B) to keep the contents under pressure by supplying gas from a liquefier carbon dioxide bulb (C). The bulb is held in the device, with its outlet uppermost, between a lower shut-off valve (14) which puts the interior of the device in communication with the barrel, and an upper shut-off valve (26) which is controlled to regulate the flow of gas from the capsule to the barrel. The upper valve (26) is controlled by a piston (40) which is biased towards a position opening the valve but which is displaceable by an increase in the barrel pressure to close the valve. The lower valve (14) is normally closed and is opened automatically after a capsule has been loaded into the device and the inlet to the valve has been sealed off from the exterior. <IMAGE>
