Abstract

Alarms operated by expansion of solids. - A thermometer for indicating the highest temperature attained by an electric transformer &c. comprises a heat-sensitive element arranged to rotate a shaft which actuates an indicator in one direction only: an alarm device may be included. The heat-sensitive element, which in the form shown consists of a bi-metallic coil 11, is secured at one end to the vertical shaft 12, and the indicator consists of a drum 13 arranged within a casing 4 and having a hub 14 with a polished lower surface which rests on the polished surface of the portion 2 of the casing. The shaft 12 passes freely through the hub 14 and carries a collar 15 carrying an arm 16 which engages an arm 17 secured to the hub 14 so as to rotate the drum 13 when the temperature rises. The drum is re-set bv a rotatable friction disc 20 which can be pushed up by hand to engage a similar disc 18 on the hub 14. The alarm device shown in Fig. 4 comprises a cam 21 secured to the hub 14 and adapted, when a predetermined temperature is reached to open the contacts 22 and introduce a flasher 25 into the circuit of a lamp 24. In a modification the cam closes the circuit of the lamp. The lamp may be replaced by a bell &c.
