Abstract
A fastening mechanism for windows or doors comprise keep pegs 18 carried by a vertically movable bar 2 mounted in a fixed frame 4. A movable frame 6 has a number of keeps 22. In the closed position of the movable frame a cockspur handle 20 carried by the movable frame 6 engages a slide 12 linked to the vertical bar to move the keep pegs 18 into engagement with the keeps 22 and thereby provide a multi-point fastening. The mechanism is particularly applicable to aluminium window frames in which a single point fastening by means of a conventional cockspur handle is susceptible to being forced by a jemmy. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fastening mechanisms for windows or doors
The present invention relates to fastening mechanisms for windows or doors.
Conventionally, hinge-mounted aluminium windows tend to be locked by a latch of the cockspur handle type which is mounted on the opening frame and engages, in the closed position, an abutment on a fixed frame. The frames are conventionally constructed from extruded aluminium sections and it has been found that this type of latch, which effectively latches at a single point, is vulnerable to being forced by a jemmy which can be used to exert sufficient pressure to deform the frame at the fixing point. Multi-point fastening mechanisms such as that known as the espagniolette provide greater resistance to being forced by a jemmy.
However, aluminium sections which are currently used in the construction of aluminium frames generally provide insufficient space for housing an espagniolette type multi-point fastening mechanism.
The novel features of the present invention will be apparent from the following description given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing a side of an outer or fixed frame of an aluminium window and incorporating part of a multi-point window fastening mechanism in accordance with one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the cooperating side of an inner or movable frame of the aluminium window, and incorporating another, cooperating, part of the mechanism;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevation showing the window when closed and the fastening engaged; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section equivalent to
Figure 3, with the fastening engaged.
The multi-point fastening mechanism shown in the drawings comprises a vertical bar 2 mounted for vertical sliding movement on a vertical side member 4 of the fixed frame which lies adjacent a vertical side member 6 of the movable frame when the latter is in its closed position. The bar 2 is provided with longitudinal edge portions of reduced thickness, the inner edge portion (the left-hand edge portion as viewed in Figure 1) being retained behind a projecting flange 8 (see
Figure 3) provided in the extruded section which forms the side member 4. The outer edge portion of the bar is retained behind the flange provided along one edge of each of several retainer members 10 secured at spaced positions along the length of the side member 4. In this manner the bar 2 is securely retained on the side member 4, but is free to slide vertically thereon.As will be apparent from the drawing, the bar 2 is mounted on a face of the side member 4 which lies perpendicularly to the plane of the window and is concealed when the window is closed.
A slide 12 mounted on an inner face of the side member 4 is movable vertically through a limited distance and includes a shaft 14 projecting through the inner face to lie adjacent the outer face of the bar 2. The shaft 14 of the slide lies between a pair of adjacent vertically spaced legs 1 6 extending laterally from the bar 2 so that the bar 2 is entrained for vertical movement with the slide 12. The bar also carries a plurality of laterally-projecting keep pegs 18 spaced at intervals along the bar 2.
The adjacent side member 6 of the movable frame carries, on its inner face, a conventional handle 20 of the cockspur type which cooperates with the slide 1 2 in a manner to be described. The side member 6 also carries a plurality of keeps 22 corresponding in number and position to the keep pegs 18 on the bar 2. Each keep 22 is screwed or otherwise fixed to a face of the side member 6 which lies perpendicularly to the plane of the window and projects laterally from this face to cooperate with the pegs 18, the keeps 22 iikewise being concealed when the window is closed. Each keep 22 comprises a vertical flange 24 with an inclined lower edge 26, the flange 24 cooperating with the corresponding keep peg 18 in the locked condition of the mechanism as will now be described.
In the unlocked condition of the mechanism, the bar 2 is located at a level at which each peg 18 lies just below the lower edge 26 of the corresponding keep 22 so that the movable frame can be moved freely between its open position, outwardly of the fixed frame, and its closed position without hindrance by the keep pegs 1 8.
When the movable frame is moved into its closed position, the cockspur handle 20 is moved to latch the window in the conventional manner. The nose of the handle 20 moves along the slide 12 and engages into a recess 1 2a in the slide 12.
Before engaging into the recess 1 2a, the nose rides up along a wedge-like portion of the slide body, this movement tending to draw the two frames closer together and compressing rubber or other weather seals (not shown) between the two frames. Further upwards movement of the nose of the handle after it has engaged into the recess 1 2a in the slide 12 will result in upwards movement of the slide 12 and thereby also of the bar 2 and keep pegs 18. The keep pegs 18 will ride up along the inclined lower edges 26 of the corresponding keep flanges 24 into engagement with the keep flange 24 itself.In this manner, the movable frame is locked against movement in an opening direction not only by the latching action of the cockspur handle 20 but also by the engagement of the keep pegs 1 8 with the keeps 22 at spaced positions along the vertical sides of the frame, thus considerably improving the security of the fastening, particularly its resistance to being forced by a jemmy.
The fastening mechanism particularly described is mounted externally of the frame sections and can be applied to existing designs of extruded aluminium section.
The cockspur handle may advantageously incorporate a key-operated lock in order to lock the handle in its closed position and therefore prevent opening of the window from the outside by breaking the glass and operating the handle.
With the fastening mechanism described, by mounting the movable part of the fastening mechanism on the fixed frame, and by using a handle on the movable frame to operate the movable part of the mechanism, difficulties which would arise if the movable part of the mechanism were mounted on the movable frame, are avoided. In this respect, with the design of section shown in Figure 4, the handle on the movable frame must be laterally offset from the part of the fastening mechanism carried by the frame; if this part were to be the movable part, rather than the fixed part, a complex linkage would be required between the handle and the mechanism and this would be difficult to provide satisfactorily within the available space.
Although the mechanism has been particularly described in relation to a window fastening machine, it may also be used as a door fastening mechanism.
