Abstract
A handle 80, engaged directly with the locking device of a window 20, additionally comprising a projecting arm 90 that can be pivoted to block the movement of the window. The handle may be adapted for situations where either the window 20 or the window frame 30 carries the locking means. The projecting arm may also be engaged with the locking means and the locking device of the window may form an espagnolette mechanism. The handle can be used to replace the handles on existing windows to provide them with additionally protection against forced entry. The handle may additionally be locked in position by a locking device 120 engaging the handle, which may be operated by a key 130. The key may be captivated in the handle lock when it is in its disengaged position. The projecting arm may further carry a plug (fig. 4, 110) of a depth chosen to match the spacing between the underside of the projecting arm and the surface of the frame when the handle is in the locked position. The frame may have a plate 100 attached to it at the position where the projecting arm projects over it when it is in its locked position to prevent damage in the event of forced entry.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Blocking Device
The present invention concerns novel blocking devices which can form part of a window as originally fitted, or which can be fitted to existing windows, in order to improve the ability of the window to resist attempts to force it open. The invention also extends to windows and frame arrangements. Also provided are methods for securing windows.
Double-glazing and other window arrangements are typically constructed using espagnolette locking mechanisms in which a handle on the window operates a bar which in turn operates cams. Turning the handle to a"locked"position causes the bar to move, in turn causing bolts (so called"mushroom bolts") extending outwardly from the side of the window to slide and engage complementary receiving members in the frame.
This"multi-point"locking mechanism reduces the ability to force a window open by attacking it at a single point. Such espagnolette locking mechanisms are often combined with"shootbolt"locks which are also operated by the handle and in a"locked"position project bolts from the top and bottom of the window into complementary receiving members in the top and bottom of the frame.
Despite the high level of security provided by such locking mechanisms, it is found that over time their mechanical strength does decrease and in particular their metal parts can become brittle, meaning that it does become possible to force the lock mechanism, and thereby force open the window, using a crowbar.
In order to provide additional protection for ageing windows or doors, GB 2310449 provides lockable turnbuckle blocking devices, comprising a base which is fixed to a window or door adjacent to its frame (or vice versa) and a latch bar pivotally mounted
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
on the base. The base is attached to the window, door or frame by way of conventional screw fixings. However, it has been found that such arrangements can still be forced since the screw fixings engage the window, door or frame in a manner which does not interfere with the espagnolette mechanism, which means that the screws typically engage a plastic section of the window, door or frame. Plastic (as well as e. g. aluminium) is, relative to e. g. steel, readily deformable and therefore it is reasonably easy to force the screws from the window, door or frame and open the window or door.
To attempt to counter this, multiple devices according to GB 2310449 may be attached to each window, door or frame, but this is costly, unsightly and inconvenient.
In particular, it may present a safety hazard when a window or door needs to be opened in the case of e. g. fire, when multiple locks must be disengaged.
The present invention overcomes the prior art disadvantages and provides a simple and convenient blocking device.
According to the present invention there is provided a window movable within a frame between open and closed positions, said window comprising locking means engageable with said frame and a handle which operates said locking means and having a base about which it is pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, said handle having a projecting arm which, when said handle is in said unlocked position, is positioned over said window such that said window is able to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked position, is positioned over said frame such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
This provides a substantial advantage over current window locks and blocking devices by having the projecting arm directly engaged with the locking means, which is typically constructed of steel rather than plastic or aluminium. The base of the handle (the handle may also be referred to as a"handle arrangement") is also engaged with the locking means typically by way of two retaining screws, which hold it in place irrespective of movement of the arms and spindle of the handle. Since these retaining screws are engaged directly with the locking means (which is typically made of steel) rather than the e. g. plastic frame, it is much more securely retained than e. g. the prior art lockable turnbuckle blocking devices (above). Thus the mechanical strength provided as a whole by the projecting arm is substantially greater than that provided by existing blocking devices.
The fact that the base of the handle is engaged directly with the locking means also provides the substantial advantage that even if the locking means fails and e. g the spindle becomes freely rotatable within the locking means, the handle of the present invention still securely locks the window.
The projecting arm is typically at an angle of about 90 degrees to the first
arm, although of course it may be positioned at other angles to the first arm so long as it allows/blocks movement of the window past the frame as necessary.
The projecting arm can be engaged (either detachably, lockingly or otherwise) with the locking means. Thus the projecting arm can for example have a threaded portion and the locking means define a channel through which projecting arm engaging means such as e. g. a bolt can engage the projecting arm. The projecting arm engaging means can be e. g. a standard threaded bolt or can be slotted or have a socket for mating with an Allen key, spanner or other similar means to enable it to be engaged and/or disengaged with the projecting arm.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Alternatively the projecting arm engaging means can lockingly engage the locking means. In such a case the locking means of the present invention can be sold as a kit with the projecting arm and projecting arm engaging means so that a user can lockingly engage the projecting arm engaging means when desired.
The present invention also concerns the handle itself, and thus according to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a handle for a window, said window comprising locking means, said handle comprising a base, a first arm adapted for pivoting said handle about said base, a projecting arm and a spindle adapted to engage said locking means.
The window may be movable within a frame between open and closed positions, said window comprising locking means engageable with said frame, said handle and spindle being engageable with said locking means such that they operate said locking means, and said handle when engaged with said locking means being pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, said handle having a projecting arm which, when said handle is in said unlocked position, is positioned over said window such that said window is able to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked position, is positioned over said frame such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
The handle of the present invention can also be used to replace the handles on existing window, thus providing them with additional protection against attempted forced entry.
Thus according to the present invention there is also provided a method of enhancing the security of a window movable within a frame between open and closed
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
positions, said window comprising locking means engageable with said frame and a preexisting handle which operates said locking means and which is pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, the method comprising the steps of replacing said pre-existing handle with a handle comprising a base, a first arm adapted to pivot said handle about said base, a projecting arm and a spindle adapted to engage said locking means, said projecting arm being arranged such that when said handle is in said unlocked position, is positioned over said window such that said window is able to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked position, is positioned over said frame such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
The handle may additionally comprise lock means which engage the handle in the locked position. Thus the handle can be securely locked, in turn engaging the door or window locking means with the frame, and preventing unlocking by e. g. smashing a window and turning the handle.
The lock means may automatically engage the handle in the locked position upon its being pivoted into the locked position from the unlocked position.
Engagement and/or disengagement of the handle lock may be carried out using a key. For example, where the handle lock is not automatically engaged by pivoting the handle to the locked position, the handle lock may be engaged (and disengaged) using a key. In cases where the handle lock is automatically engaged by pivoting the handle to the locked position then its disengagement and any re-engagement may be effected by using a key.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
In order to help prevent loss of the key, it may be retained i. e. captivated in the handle lock means when it is in the disengaged position, and it may be removable from the handle lock means when it is in the engaged position.
In order to minimise the amount of movement which may be achieved if the locking means fails and the movement of the window within the frame is limited only by the projecting arm of the handle, the projecting arm may carry a plug, for example made of a plastic material, of a depth chosen to match the spacing between the underside of the projecting arm and the surface of the frame when the handle is in the locked position.
Obviously an intruder may be able, when attempting to force open the window, to exert a large amount of force upon the relatively small part of the frame surface which is contacted by the projecting arm.
In order to reduce the possibility of an intruder being able to damage the
frame to such an extent that the projecting arm is able to move past it, the frame may have attached to it (i. e. may comprise) a plate at the location over which the projecting arm is positioned when the handle is in the locked position. The plate may be e. g. a metal plate.
Obviously, if the projecting arm comprises a plug then the plate must be taken into account as forming part of the surface of the frame when determining the depth of the plug.
Thus a method according to the present invention may also comprise the step of attaching a plate to the frame at the location over which the projecting arm is positioned when the handle is in the closed position.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Although the invention described above concerns windows which comprise locking means and to which the handle is engaged, the invention is equally applicable to and is concerned with window movable within a frame, the frame comprising the locking means and to which the handle is engaged.
Thus also provided according to the present invention is a window movable within a frame between open and closed positions, said frame comprising locking means engageable with said window and a handle which operates said locking means and which is pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, said handle having a base, a projecting arm pivotable about said base and which, when said handle is in said unlocked position, is positioned over said frame such that said window is able to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked position, is positioned over said window such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
Also provided is a handle for a frame for a window, said frame comprising locking means, said handle comprising a base, a first arm adapted for pivoting said handle about said base, a projecting arm and a spindle adapted to engage said locking means.
The window may be movable within said frame between open and closed positions, said frame comprising locking means engageable with said window, said handle and spindle being engageable with said locking means such that they operate said locking means, and said handle when engaged with said locking means being pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, said handle having a projecting arm which, when said handle is in said unlocked position, is positioned over said frame such that said window is able to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
position, is positioned over said window such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
Also provided is a kit of parts for a handle for a frame for a window, said frame comprising locking means, said handle comprising a base, a first arm adapted for pivoting said handle about said base, and a spindle adapted to engage said locking means, said kit additionally comprising a projecting arm engageable with said handle.
In the kit of parts, said window being can be movable within said frame between open and closed positions, said frame comprising locking means engageable with said window, said handle and spindle being engageable with said locking means such that they operate said locking means, and said handle when engaged with said locking means being pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, said projecting arm, when said handle is in said unlocked position, being positioned over said frame such that said window is able to move past said frame, and said projecting arm, when said handle is in said locked position, being positioned over said window such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
Also provided is a method of enhancing the security of a window movable within a frame between open and closed positions, said frame comprising locking means engageable with said window and a pre-existing handle which operates said locking means and which is pivotable between a locked position in which opening of said window is prevented and an unlocked position in which said window may be opened, comprising the steps of replacing said pre-existing handle with a handle comprising a base, a first arm adapted to pivot said handle about said base, a projecting arm and a spindle adapted to engage said locking means, said projecting arm being arranged such that when said handle is in said unlocked position, it is positioned over said frame such that said window is able
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
to move past said frame, and which, when said handle is in said locked position, is positioned over said window such that it blocks movement of said window past said frame.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example, the blocking device.
Of the Figures:
Figure 1 shows a front view of a window according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows an enlarged view of area 10 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows the view of Figure 2 but for the window of Figure 1 having a conventional prior art handle; and
Figure 4 shows section I-I of Figure 2.
As can be seen from the Figures, window 20 is mounted on and movable within frame 30. It has an espagnolette and shootbolt locking mechanism (not shown) which is constructed from steel and has mushroom bolts which engage frame 30 at positions 43-44 along its side and positions 51,52 at its top and bottom respectively. This is a standard locking mechanism for windows and doors, particularly for double-glazing panels.
A standard handle arrangement for such an espagnolette and shootbolt locking mechanism is shown at Figure 3. Handle 60 is in the"locked"position when
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
oriented downwards, at which the espagnolette and shootbolt locking mechanism engages frame 30 to prevent opening of window 20. Rotating (pivoting) handle 60 clockwise by 90 degrees (arrow 70) places it in the"unlocked"position, causing the espagnolette and shootbolt locking mechanism to disengage frame 30 and allowing window 20 to be opened.
In order to enhance the security of window 20, handle 60 is removed and replaced by handle 80 having base 81 engaged by screws 82,83 with the locking means, and projecting arm 90.
In use, in the"locked"position, handle 80 is orientated downwards, meaning that projecting arm 90 is positioned over frame 30 such that it blocks movement of window 20 past frame 30. As before, espagnolette and shootbolt locking mechanism engages frame 30 to prevent opening of window 20, but if that mechanism is comprised then projecting arm 90 will still prevent window 20 passing frame 30.
Frame 30 is also provided with metal plate 100 located where projecting arm 90 is positioned when handle 90 is in the"locked"position. This acts to disperse any force placed upon frame 30 by a person attempting to forcibly open window 20.
In order to minimise the gap between projecting arm 90 and frame 20, projecting arm 90 is provided with plug 110, and this reduces the force exerted on plate 100 by projecting arm 90.
Handle 80 additionally comprises lock means 120 which engages handle 80 in the locked position. Lock means 120 is engaged and disengaged using key 130. In addition, lock means 120 is automatically engaged upon rotation of handle 80 into the locked position. This provides a valuable safety feature.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
In order to help prevent key 130 being lost, it is captivated in lock means 120 when it is in the disengaged position and is removable from lock means 120 when it is in the engaged position.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
