Abstract
An annular filter element comprises pleated filtering paper (10) in the form of a cylinder which is sealed at its ends in end caps (12 and 14) made of a substantially rigid moulded synthetic plastics material. Each end cap has an annular groove (24) formed in its outer flat surface so as to receive the root portion of a sealing ring (20 or 22) which is made of a soft synthetic rubbery material so as to yield or deform under pressure. Preferably, each sealing ring has an outer face and two lateral faces of concave shape. The rings may be preformed and secured to the end caps by adhesive or moulded into the end caps, either after or during the moulding of the end caps themselves. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Air filter element
This invention relates to an air filter element comprising a cylinder or other annulus of air filtering material which is sealed in end caps at its two ends.
It has already been proposed to form an external sealing ring or ridge on one or both of the end caps in such a filter. Hitherto, however, the sealing rings or ridges have been formed integrally on the end caps and have therefore been made of the same material as the latter. The end caps need to be fairly rigid and it has been quite usual to make them of a substantially rigid synthetic plastics material. It therefore follows that the sealing rings or ridges provided on them have likewise been fairly rigid and unyielding.
Unless these fairly rigid sealing rings or ridges bear against softer material in a filter casing or other compartment in which the filter element is used, the sealing rings or ridges are not always completely effective in preventing leakage of air round the air filter element. It is accordingly an aim of the present invention to provide such a filter element with improved sealing rings or ridges.
With this aim in view, the invention is directed to an annular air filter element having, at its two ends, end caps or other end surfaces of which at least one is provided with a sealing ring or ridge adapted to yield or deform under pressure.
In a preferred form of the invention, the sealing ring or ridge is made of a soft resilient material such as a soft synthetic rubbery material which is let into an annular groove formed in the external surface of at least one of the end caps, the lower portion of the sealing ring or ridge being securely bonded to the respective end cap. If desired, the end cap and the sealing ring or ridge can be made separately from one another and can then be bonded together by an appropriate adhesive. An alternative is to mould the end cap and the sealing ring or ridge in one and the same operation, in which case the material of the sealing ring or ridge will bond itself to the material of the end cap as they cool down from their liquid state.
It is advantageous for the sealing ring or ridge to have a special shape in cross-section so as to improve the way in which it yields or deforms under pressure. In particular, it is advantageous for the two lateral faces and the outer surface of the sealing ring or ridge to be of concave shape.
An example of an air filter element in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:~
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the air filter element;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of part of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line Ill-Ill in
Figure 1.
The air filter element comprises filtering material 10 in the form of pleated air filtering paper, the pleated form of the paper being shown in Figure 3. The upper and lower ends of the air filtering material are sealed in end caps 12 and 14 made of a substantially rigid moulded synthetic plastics material. The end caps are moulded on to the filtering material so that an excellent seal is formed between them.
In order to give the filter element sufficient strength, the air filtering material is bounded on its inner and outer peripheries by perforated metal screens 16 and 18. The upper and lower ends of these two screens are likewise embedded in the end caps 12 and 14, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
As shown in Figure 1 , the upper end cap 12 has a sealing ring or ridge 20 provided on its upper surface. The lower end cap 14 similarly has a sealing ring or ridge 22. The two sealing rings or ridges 20, 22 are of identical construction and are made of a soft synthetic rubbery material which yields or deforms very easily under pressure. This material is therefore quite different from the substantially rigid material of the caps 12 and 14.
The two end caps each have an annular groove 24 formed in their outer surfaces to receive the root portions of the two sealing rings or ridges 20 and 22. The sealing rings or ridges can accordingly be moulded in situ on the end caps so that the sealing rings or ridges bond themselves to the end caps and the sealing rings or ridges to be made also possible for the sealing rings or ridges 20 and 22 to be moulded at the same time as the moulding of the end caps 12 and 14, although this method requires careful control of the moulding operation. Yet another alternative is for the end caps the the sealing rings or ridges to be made separately and then to be brought together and bonded to each other by an appropriate adhesive.
As indicated already, the sealing rings or ridge 20 and 22 will be made of a synthetic material having the general properties of soft rubber. Such materials are well known in the trade and it is not thought that they need be specified in detail here.
It is also possible to use a foamed synthetic plastics material provided the voids or cells in the foam material are so minute as not to allow air to leak through the material of the sealing ring or ridge. In certain instances, it may well be possible for the end caps and the sealing rings or ridges to be made of essentially the same synthetic plastics material, except that the end caps are made of a rigid form of that material while the sealing rings or ridges are in a foamed form of that material.
It is advantageous for the sealing rings or ridges 20, 22 to have a particular shape in cross-section.
This is illustrated in Figure 2, from which it will be seen that the two lateral faces 26 and 28, and also the outer face 30, of each sealing ring or ridge are of concave shape. In addition, it will be seen that two flat portions 32 and 34 are formed between the concave face 26 and the concave surface 30 and also between the concave surface 30 and the concave face 28. These two flat surfaces 32 and 34 lie at an angle of 450 with respect to the longitudinal axis 36 of the filter. it has been found that this form of ring or ridge gives improved sealing properties.
Claims (11)
1. An annular air filter element having, at its two ends, end caps or other end surfaces of which at least one is provided with a sealing ring or annular ridge adapted to yield or deform under pressure.
2. An air filter element according to claim 1, in which the sealing ring or annular ridge is made of a soft synthetic rubbery material.
3. An air filter element according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the sealing ring or annular ridge is let into an annular groove formed in the external surface of the respective end cap or other end surface, the lower portion of the sealing ring or annular ridge being securely bonded to the end cap or end surface.
4. An air filter element according to any one of claims 1-3, in which the end cap or end surface and the sealing ring or annular ridge are made separately from one another and are then brought together and bonded to one another during manufacture of the air filter element.
5. An air filter element according to any one of claims 1-3, in which the end cap or other end surface and the sealing ring or annular ridge are moulded in one and the same operation during manufacture of the filter element, the material of the sealing ring or annular ridge thereby bonding itself to the material of the end cap or other end surface as they cool down from their liquid state.
6. An air filter element according to any preceding claim, in which the two lateral faces and the outer surface of the sealing ring or annular ridge are of concave shape.
7. An air filter element according to claim 6, in which two bevelled portions are formed between the concave outer surface of the sealing ring or annular ridge and the two concave lateral faces thereof.
8. An air filter element according to any preceding claim comprising filtering material in the form of pleated air filtering paper.
9. An air filter element according to claim 8, in which the pleated air filtering material is of cylindrical form with the two ends of the cylinder being sealed in end caps made of a substantially rigid moulded synthetic plastics material, the end caps being moulded on to the filtering material so that an air-tight seal is formed between them.
10. An air filter element according to claim 8 or claim 9, in which the air filtering material is bounded on its inner and outer peripheries by perforated metal screens.
11. An air filter element substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
