Abstract

A device for dispensing foam, particularly for attachment to an agricultural spray boom for marking with foam the extent of the area sprayed comprises a passageway (6) for a frother e.g. compressed gas and a passageway (8) for the foam base material, the frother being fed through a nozzle into a chamber into which the foam base material is also supplied and the reduced pressure generated by the frother leaving the nozzle sucks the base material into the chamber. The flow of base material in pipeline (8) may be governed by a valve which is movable in accordance with the pressure in pipeline (6). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Foam forming apparatus and fluid control apparatus The invention relates to a foam-forming head with a pipeline for a flowing or flowable medium.
The invention also relates to a control appa ratus for regulating the flow in at least one pipeline in accordance with the flow in another pipeline the apparatus having a flow control element provided with a working member arranged in the flow regulating pipel ine and connected with a flow control ele ment.
Finally, the invention also relates to an apparatus mainly for marking out border or row lines in agriculture by means of foam.
When spraying agricultural land using mounted spraying frames "foam-marking" may be used for marking out the border lines or lines of rows of the area covered by the spraying.
A known foam-marking apparatus of the German Company JACOBI comprises a reservoir for the foam-forming (base) substance, foam-applicator units, a foam feeder head and foam supply pipelines. An essential feature of this apparatus is that the foam is generated in the reservoir containing the base substance of the foam by blowing air into the reservoir and the foam thus generated is pressed, via a foam supply pipeline, into the foam feeder head wherefrom the foam is applied to the field according to the regulation of the outflow and the foam-marking process is finished.
The drawbacks of this solution are that, due to the volume of foam, the diameter of the foam pipeline has to be large, the foam pipelines, due to the large dimensions of mounted foldable spraying frames, can become kinked or bent thus causing a permanent deformation, i.e. a reduction of cross-section of the foam pipeline, the length of foam pipeline reduces the "life" of foam, i.e. it breaks up in the time taken to travel along the pipeline, and finally the foam has to be transported a considerable distance to the place of discharge and therefore controlling the feed of foam is difficult and very inaccurate.
Another known system for foam marking is used by the German company HESSEL. This is essentially the same as the one described above with the only difference that a valve is built into the foam pipeline.
The drawback of this solution is that when the apparatus is immobile the foam does not flow and it loses its frothy state. This collapsed foam cannot be used for foam-marking and therefore the consumption of the foam base material is increased.
The aim of the invention is to eliminate the drawbacks mentioned above and to provide a foam-forming head with small constructional dimensions supplying a foam of better quality than hitherto known.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a control apparatus for regulating the flow of the foam forming media by regulating the flow of one medium by the pressure of another medium.
Finally, the aim of the invention is to provide an apparatus mainly for making out border lines in agriculture with an instant discharge of foam immediately after the foam has been formed and without requiring a foam pipeline.
The aim of the invention is achieved by means of a foam4orming head provided with a separate pipeline for the foam base material and a separate pipeline for the frothing material, and an injector wherein one of the pipelines is connected to the mixing chamber of the injector and the meduim pipeline for the frothing material is connected to the nozzle of the injector.
Also, the aim of the invention is also achieved by a control apparatus wherein a working element is operated by the pressure in the pipeline provided for the regulating (controlling) medium.
In an advantageous embodiment of the in ve tion, in view of its simplicity of construction and sensitivity of operation, the working member is formed by a diaphragm in fluid communication with the pipeline for the regulating medium.
In another expediently developed embodiment of the invention, in view of its carrying capacity and accuracy, the working mernber is formed by a piston in fluid communication with the pipeline for the regulating medium.
Finally, the aim of the invention is also achieved by an apparatus comprising the foam forming head connected in series to the control apparatus.
To improve the quality of foam generated by the apparatus according to the invention, in another favourable embodiment of the invention, a mechanism for increasing the formation of foam is coupled to the foam forming head and is expediently a multilayered sieve-plate.
The invention will now be further described, purely by way of example of preferred embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a section of the foam forming head according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a section of the control apparatus according to the invention; and Figure 3 shows a section of the apparatus according to the invention.
The foam-forming head 1 0 according to the invention is illustrated in Fig. 1 and includes a pipeline 1 for the foam base material and a pipeline 2 for the foam forming material (frother) both being fed from suitable reservoirs. Injector 3 arranged in the foam-forming head 10 is fitted with a nozzle 5 connected to the frother pipeline 2 and a mixing chamber 4 connected to the foam base material pipeline 1.
The function of the foam-forming head 10 fundamentally depends on the operating of injector 3. The frother material flows from pipeline 2 through the nozzle 5 at a suitable pressure. Due to the suction effect thus created, the base material flows from the medium pipeline 1 into the mixing chamber 4 where the foam is formed. Thereafter, the formed foam is discharged from the foamforming head 10.
The control apparatus 11 according to the invention is illustrated in Fig. 2 and consists of a working member 9 and a flow regulating (control) element 7. Working member 9 is arranged in fluid connection with the pipeline 6 in such way that the working element 9 senses the pressure of the medium flowing in the pipeline 6. Working element 9 is connected with the flow regulating element 7 expediently in the form of a spring loaded valve built into the regulated pipeline 8. The working element 9 is expediently formed by a piston, but it may also be formed by a diaphragm.
The essence of the function of the control apparatus 11 according to the invention is as follows: Working member 9 senses the pressure of the medium flowing in the regulating medium pipeline 6, which, in this particular embodiment, automatically controls the regulating (control) element 7. This arrangement renders it possible to regulate and control the flow of one medium used in a process technology by the continuous flow of another medium used in the same process technology.
The apparatus 1 3 according to the invention illustrated in Fig. 3 is applied mainly in agriculture for marking out lines and consists of control apparatus 11 and foam forming head 10. In order to obtain a better quality of foam, it is expedient to arrange a mechanism 1 2 for increasing foam formation, downstream of and connected in series with apparatus 1 3. Mechanism 1 2 is formed by a single- or multilayered sieve plate.
The essence of the function of apparatus 1 3 is that the foam-forming (frother) material flows in the pipeline 2, which is connected to the regulating pipeline 6, and through the nozzle 5 of the injector 3 arranged in the foam-forming head 10. The preferred foamfoaming (frother) medium is compressed air but it may be a liquid or another suitable gaseous medium. The flow of the frother causes a reduced pressure in the mixing chamber 4 of injector 3 and thereby also in the foam base material pipeline 1 connected with the regulated flow pipeline 8. The control element 7 governing the flow of the regulated medium in pipeline 8 is controlled b? the frother material flowing in the regulating pi peline 6 i.e. it opens or closes it.
The foam travels from the mixing nozzle 4 to the mechanism 1 2 which increases the formation of foam wherefrom a ready and longlife foam is discharged directly onto the soil.
The apparatus 1 3 can be operated by remote control with one single operating element.
The application of the invention is by no means restricted to the embodiments described by way of example herein which have a general informative character.
