Abstract
One or more substantially L- shaped brackets 10 having means 14, 16 by which they may be secured to a wall or ceiling of a room and means 23 for attaching a strip 26 of decorative strip to cover part or all of the bracket(s) 10. May be used to support coving, radiator shelves, and the like. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Support arrangement
The invention relates to a support arrangement for shelving, cornice coving and the like.
It is known to provide a shelf over a radiator, said shelf commonly being supported by two or more L-shaped brackets. It is also known to provide coving made of plaster or expanded plastics material positioned at the top of an internal wall of a room where the wall meets the ceiling to provide a decorative cornice. Such coving is usuaily fixed by means of adhesive.
The present invention provides support apparatus comprising at least one substantially
L-shaped bracket having means by which it may be secured to a wall and/or ceiling of a building and attachment means by which a strip of decorative material is attachable to the or each said bracket between limbs of said L to cover part of the or each said bracket.
Preferably the or each bracket has a substantially arcuate web extending between limbs of the L. Preferably also said attachment means are such that the said strip is releasably attachable to said bracket. Desirably formations are provided in said web to receive ribs extending longitudinally of the decorative strip at the rear thereof, the strip being of extruded construction.
Preferably also end covers are provided, said end covers having a lip to overlap marginal end portions of said strip, said end covers being secured by attachment means provided on the strip and/or the or each bracket. Preferably the said means for fixing the or each bracket to a wall and or ceiling is provided on the bracket by apertures in the bracket by which the bracket may be attached using screws or other fixings. The strip may be made from any suitable material such as plastics, foamed plastics, or metal such as aluminium. The strip material may be heat insulating. Preferably the strip presents a concave surface when fitted to the bracket said concave surface acting to deflect hot convected air from the radiator into a room in which the radiator is situated.
The or each bracket is preferably provided with one or more apertures to allow electrical cables to be situated behind the said strip.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of apparatus according to the invention supporting a shelf, and
Fig. 2 is an elevational view in the direction of arrow A of Fig. 1 shown with the shelf removed.
The apparatus shown in the figures comprises a substantially L-shaped bracket 10 comprising a web 12 having flanges arranged normally to the surface of the web, said flanges 1 4a and 1 4b arranged in an L-shaped configuration. An upper flange 1 4a is provided with apertures 1 6 by means of which the bracket 10 may be secured to a ceiling or other horizontal surface and a vertically extending flange 1 4b is provided with apertures 1 8 by means of which the bracket may be secured to a vertical surface such as the wall of a building, by means of screws or other similar fixings. In the particular application shown in
Fig. 1 the bracket is fixed over and above a radiator to support a shelf 20.The shelf is in this case secured to two of the brackets by means of screws passing through the apertures 1 6. This ensures that the shelf cannot be easily dislodged from the brackets. The web 1 2 has a substantially arcuate concave front edge 22 this edge is indented at regions 23, a pair of fingers 24 being provided in each indentation said fingers being shaped to receive between them a bead of circular cross section formed integrally with and to the rear of an arcuate coving strip 26 said bead being joined to said strip 26 by integral rib 28. The coving strip 26 is provided with angled longitudinal edge margins 30 which are adapted to wrap around end portions of the bracket 10 when the beads 26 are received as a snap fit between respective pairs of fingers 24.An end cover 32 (shown only in part in Fig. 1) is provided at each end of the coving strip 26 to provide a neat finish. The end cover has a lip by means of which it overlaps the coving strip 26 and is secured to bracket 10 by the provision of barbed portions attached to the end cover 32 which extend through apertures 34 provided in a bracket near to the end cover 32. The arcuate surface of the cover strip 26 tends to deflect heat, from a radiator above which it is situated in a room, into the room. When the apparatus is used for forming, for example, a decorative cornice, the bracket is situated where a vertical wall meets a horizontal ceiling so that the cover strip 26 extends between the ceiling and the wall the end cover 32 is not required. In such an application the coving strip 26 may be mitred at external and internal corners or alternatively pre-moulded special corner sections may be provided as necessary.
Various modifications may be made to the invention shown in the drawings without departing from the scope of the invention, for instance the fixing arrangement by means of which the cover strip 26 is attached to bracket 10 may be varied and the cover strip 26 need not be arcuate but may be of a different shape for example planar, convex, ribbed or fluted.
Apertures may be provided in the web or a flange of the bracket to enable electrical wiring to be hidden behind the coving strip. This is especially useful in coving applications.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the
Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
