Abstract

211,707. Briggs, J. C. Feb. 26, 1923. Journals; oil retaining.-A journal bearing for connecting-rod big ends, crank shafts has a series of unevenly supported bearing segments 7 which are mounted so that they rotate with the journal 8. The segments may be white-metalled and may rock about axles parallel and at right angles to the journal. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4 for a connecting-rod big end, segments 7 are spaced apart by rings 14, serving also as oil retaining rings, in halves, having pivots 16 in line with the rocking axis 9 of the segments. Projections 18 on the rings 14 abut against the sides of the crank webs and cause the segments to rotate with the journal. The rings 14 may serve only as oil retaining rings, the segments being fixed to the journal by other means. In a modification the segments are of tapered section, their inner perimeters being of the same radius as the journal. In another modification the segments are tapered towards both ends and their outer perimeters are of the same radius as the bore of the plummer block or the like. In this construction the segments may be spaced apart by a cage consisting of two end rings connected by bars separating the segments.
