Crank shafts.- Multiple - throw crankshafts are built up of a number of similar sections, each comprising a central journal, two crankwebs, a large crankpin, and a small crankpin, which is forced into a cylindrical bore of the large pin off the adjacent section, whereby ball or roller bearings of small diameter can be mounted on the crankpins. The sections are aligned and forced together in a press with the aid of a jig. In assembling, a roller-bearing inner race 4, Fig. 1, is forced on the larger crankpin, and the sections 1, 2 are aligned by clamping their central journals in the apertures 29 of split pistons 28, Fig. 5, slidable in a cylinder 27, Fig. 5. Apertures 31, in alignment with the interfitting crankpins, guide the press rods 32, 33. The journal roller bearings 12, Fig. 1, are assembled on segmental rings 13, held together by segmental hoops 14, which are sunk in the segments 13 but project to locate the inner races laterally, the outer races being supported in the engine casing 16 by rings 15. Oil is centrifugally fed to the crankpin bearing rollers 5 by passages 17, the bore 18 of the inner crankpin, a passage 19, a circumferential groove 20, and lateral grooves 21 in the race 4, and radial passages 22. As applied to inclined-cylinder engines, the bearing race 7 of the rod 10 and the races 6, 8 of the forked rod 11 have rounded ends to reduce the area of contact, and the races 6, 8 are provided with shoulders 9. In the case of a single connecting-rod, the race is divided in the middle of its length, or the shoulders are replaced by rings partially sunk in the connecting- rod big-end.
