Abstract

214,767. Ransome & Marles Bearing Co., Ltd., Belcher, E., and Marles, H. F. Feb. 9, 1923. Roller bearings, for crankshafts and the like, of the type in which one part is threaded over the other and the rollers inserted after the parts are assembled, have a continuous ring at one or both sides, which ring together with one side face of the bearing is slotted to enable the parts to move relatively to each other to assemble the rollers. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a connecting- rod a threadable on a crankshaft p has continuous side rings d, c, slotted at d<1>, e<1>. The connecting-rod has a slot a<1> and the width of the slots a<1>, d<1>, e<1> is equal to the width of the crank webs. To assemble the rollers r the slots a<1>, d<1> are registered, Fig. 3, the connecting-rod is moved axially so that the slots a<1>, d<1> embrace the crank webs and the ring e is moved axially and radially so that the rollers r can be assembled one by one. The crankshaft may have a notch p<1> to facilitate assembly and when the rollers are assembled the ring e is passed into the bore of the connecting- rod and the slots a<1>, d<1> are relatively displaced, as shown in Fig. 4. The invention may be applied to bearings having one side ring only. The ring d may be integral with the outer race ring c, or the outer roller race c may be omitted. When two rows of rollers are used, the outer race rings are spaced by a separate ring and the connecting-rod a has a slot a<1> on both sides. As applied to crankshaft journals in the crank casing, the outer race ring c, Fig, 8, is mounted in a ring h in the casing m, the rings being slotted at d<1>, h<1> respectively to permit axial movement of the casing m when assembling the rollers r.
