Abstract

300,853. Noble, W. March 9, 1928. Crank shafts. - A crank shaft comprises a number of identical pressed, stamped, forged, or cast elements a<2> - - a<0> each formed with a cheek part d and a projecting shank f, adjacent elements being butt or line welded together along planes transverse to the shaft axis and ground down at the joints to form smooth bearing-surfaces. The shanks may be so formed as to constitute main journals, for example as shown at a<1>, which may be end or intermediate bearings. The flanges e on the cheeks may be dispensed with, so that the elements take the form shown in Fig. 13, being welded together in pairs before they are finally assembled. Counterweights h may be secured within the cheeks, and lubricating-oil or cooling-liquid may circulate through the shaft. The cheeks d may be employed as bearing- members, as shown.
