208,786. Tagliaferri, L. Sept. 28, 1922. Furnace details.-In an electric metallurgical furnace the electrode 1 is surrounded by a concentric water-jacketed cylinder 2 secured to the furnace walls and having two longitudinal slots through which pass the ends of an electrode holder 8 situated in the interior of the cylinder 2, the ends of the said holder extending parallel to the axis of the cylinder 2 in the form of two rods 13, for a length equal to the travel of the electrode, the upper ends of the rods being connected together by a ring 14, and coupled with the piston rods 15 of two hydraulic cylinders 16 arranged parallel to the axis of the cylinder 2 and connected to its base. 17. The base of the cylinder 2 has a circular flange 22 which projects into the upper sand-filled chamber 21 of an annular member fitted into the furnace wall around the electrode and having a lower chamber 20 through which water circulates. Two flexible metal bands 23 are secured to the bottom of the electrode holder 8 so as to close the slots in the walls of the cylinder 2 when the electrode is lifted, the blades being pressed against the cylinder by rollers 24. A ring 36 secured to the top of the cylinder 2 has a recess containing sand in which rests a cover 38. The electrode holder has water connections 28, 29. A copper ring 30 secured to the ring 14 supplies current to the electrode, the rods 13 being insulated from the cylinder 2 and the guide plates 11 by insulating strips 32. The rods 13 and holder 8 are fitted with a water connection 29.
