Indicating position of internal parts. - A measuring device for determining the distance between a fixed part and an adjacent part liable to movement relatively to the fixed part in ordinarily inaccessible places in the interior of machines comprises a measuring wire the end of which is adapted to be brought into engagement with the surface of the moving part and then with an abutment on the fixed part, and mechanical means for measuring the distance the wire is moved in moving its end from one part to the other. The Figures show the application for measuring the clearance under running conditions between the rotor 5 and the stator 6 of an elastic-fluid turbine. The measuring wire 15, the end of which is caused to engage successively the rotor 5, and an abutment 10 on the stator, is guided by a tube 16 which is supported on the stator by a brace 18. The tube passes out of the casing through a stuffing-box 19 and is fastened to one arm of a frame 17. The wire 15 passes out of the tube through a stuffing-box 20 and passes into and through a tube 21 secured to the other arm of the frame 17. Screws 24 fix the tube 21 in a micrometer head 23 which is screw-threaded to take a micrometer sleeve 27. Scales 26, 28 are provided on the head and sleeve respectively. Slits 31, 32 are formed in the tube 21 so that the wire 15 may be clamped in the tube by one of the screws 33, 34, 35. whichever is most convenient. A slot 36 in the sleeve 27 permits access to the screws 33, 34. A stop or knob 29 is fastened on the end of the wire. In operation, the clamping screw 33, 34 or 35 is loosened, and the wire is pushed through the tube until its end touches the rotor 5. Contact can be heard on the outside by listening with the ear against the knob 29. The wire is then clamped in the tube 21 by one of the screws, and the micrometer sleeve is screwed back until it contacts with the knob 29, and the micrometer is read. The clamp is then released, and the wire is manipulated until its bent end engages the abutment 10, when the wire is again clamped. the micrometer sleeve screwed back against the knob, and a micrometer reading taken. The difference between the readings gives the distance between the rotor and the abutment 10.
