Abstract

A keg for beverages is produced by forming two identical cup- shaped portions (10, 11) as by deep drawing pieces of sheet aluminium alloy, welding these together over their rims (16) to form the keg body, and welding to each end a cylindrical chime (12, 13) whereof the outer end is rolled over to form a bead (12a, 13a). A chime may be produced by deep drawing sheet to a cup-shape, removing the cup bottom, but leaving an inturned radiused portion, end completing the bead (12a, 13a) by pressing the radiused portion into a die with an annular, semicircular sectioned recess. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Keg The invention relates to kegs for beverages, such as beer, and from which the beverage is dispensed by introducing into the keg a gas, usually carbon dioxide, under pressure.
The invention provides a method of manufacturing a keg from sheet aluminium alloy, which method comprises forming, as by deep drawing, two cup-shaped halves of a keg body each with a domed end, welding the body halves together over their rims to provide the beverage-containing body of the keg, forming a pair of like chimes from cylindrical pieces of the sheet alloy by rolling one end of each piece to produce a hollow bead, and welding the chimes to the body so as to surround and protect its domed ends, the beads being the ends of the keg.
One domed end will additionally have an aperture in it to provide access to the interior of the body, and a valve-receiving neck will be welded to this end to encircle the aperture.
The chime at this end of the keg may be apertured so that the adjacent portion of the hollow bead forms a handle by which the keg can be readily handled.
The kegs produced by the above method are found to withstand heavy duty such as is experienced in breweries and at hotels and other dispense points, and are economically manufactured since both halves of a keg can be produced substantially by the same method steps.
The accompanying drawings show one form of keg of this invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Figure 2 is a half section.
The keg comprises four main pieces, two 10, 11 of which constitute the body and two 12, 13 are the chimes.
Each body piece is cup shaped and has a domed end 1 ova, 11 a (Fig. 2). These pieces are identically deep drawn from hard aluminium alloy sheet and the rolling rims 14 are produced in the pieces during this operation.
The pieces 10, 11 have flats 1 Ob, 11 b (Fig.
2) at the centres of their domed ends 1 ova, 11 a, and an access aperture 15 is cut in the flat 1 Ob. The two pieces are welded together over their butting rims as indicated at 16.
An internally-threaded neck 17 is welded to the flat 1 Ob to encircle the aperture 1 5. The neck 17 receives the standard valved spear by which pressure gas, e.g. CO2, is fed into the keg to discharge the liquid contents through the extractor tube of the spear.
Each chime 12, 13 is a cylindrical piece, one end of which is rolled into a hollow bead 1 2a, 1 3a. The chimes are welded to the keg body as at 18 and surround and protect the domed ends 1 Oa, 1 a and the upper chime 12 also protects the spear-receiving neck 17.
The chimes are substantially identically produced. One method of producing a chime as shown is to deep-draw sheet into a cup, removing the cup bottom to leave a 90 inturned radiused portion, and then pressing the resulting pieces into a die having an annular, semi-circular sectioned recess at one end to complete the rolled-over bead shown.
Alternatively, the cylindrical pieces to be pressed into such a die may be formed by bending flat sheet into a cylinder and buttwelding the contacting edges.
After formation the chime 12 has an aperture 19 (Fig. 1) cut in it so that the adjacent bead portion 1 2b forms a lifting handle. The chime 13 may as shown be trimmed to be shorter than the chime 12.
CLAIMS (Filed 10 Sep 1981) 1. A method of manufacturing a keg from sheet aluminium alloy, which method comprises the steps of forming two cup-shaped halves of a keg body, each with a domed end, welding the body halves together over their rims to provide the beverage containing body of the keg, forming a pair of like chimes from cylindrical pieces of the sheet alloy by rolling one end of each piece to produce a hollow bead, and welding the chimes to the body so as to surround and protect its domed ends, the beads being the ends of the keg.
2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the cup-shaped halves are produced by deep drawing the sheet alloy.
3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein one domed end has a central aperture formed in it and has a valve-receiving neck welded to it to encircle the aperture.
4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the chime at the keg end having the neck is apertured below the bead so that the adjacent portion of the bead forms a handle.
5. A method according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein a chime is produced by deep drawing alloy sheet into a cup, removing the cup bottom to leave a 90 inturned radiused portion, and pressing the resulting piece into a die having an annular, semi-circular sectioned recess to form the bead.
6. A method of manufacturing a keg substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A keg when manufactured by the method of any of claims 1 to 6.
