Fire bars and grates.- In gas producers or furnaces of the kind described in Specification 113,025 provided a t the base with rotary rollers for crushing and discharging ashes, &c., means are provided whereby each roller is rotated through a certain angle in one direction and is the n automatically reversed and rotated through the same or a different angle. Figs. 2 and 3 show the driving gear for two adjacent rollers, b, b' adapted to be rotated in opposite directions and. at different speeds by worm gearing from a driving shaft d through clutches d'. The shaft d is driven in opposite directions at intervals by one or the other of two ratchet wheels e, e' operated by pawls k, k<1> pivoted to a frame h, h' mounted in the shaft d and on which it is rocked by a rod m driven by a crank n. The shaft d actuates through a sprocket-wheel k<2>, chain k<3> and sprocket-wheel k<4> an eccentric v the rod of which is slotted at the end to engage a pin t<2> on a tumbler lever t pivoted at t'. The tumbler lever t is slotted to receive a movable weight u and is connected by an adjustable rod s to the rider r mounted on the shaft d and adapted according to its position to disengage one or other of the pawls k, k' from the ratchet wheels. By suitable adjustment of the rider r by a sleeve s<1> on the rod s, the angular movement of the rollers in the reverse directions may be varied. Where one roller only is used in conjunction with a fixed metal plate, the roller is adapted to be rotated in both directions as described above.
