To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, THOMAS ROLAND WoLLAsroN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 26 Corporation Street, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Operating the `Crusher Rolls Employed with Gas Producers, Furnaces, and the like, of vwhich the following is a specification.
The invention is for an improved method of mechanically operating or rotating the rolls employed with gas producers, furnaces and the like, for crushing and discharging ash and clinker, said invention being applicable for example, to the Crusher rolls described in the specification of my British Patent No. 113025, wherein sets of rolls are capable of being independently7 and selectively controlled as regards their rotation.
The object of the present invention is to arrange for the rolls being capable of alternate forward and reverse motions, such reverse motion being of less extent or extents than the forward movement, by preference. Thus, in the case of the crusher rolls described in the specification of my patent above named where a pair of rolls move inwardly or towards each other by rotating in opposite directions l now arrange for these movements to be reversed at intervals of time, when required. For example, after a roll has had an angular movement of 25 degrees say, it may be stopped and made to move backwards through an angle of 1.5 degrees say, the first above-mentioned movement taking place when crushing operations are in progress, and the latter or reverse movement taking place when clearing operations are required. The introduction of these move-ments or extents thereof may be determined by the attendant in charge.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a form and application of the invention to a gas producer, and of the kind according to my prior Patent No. 113025 referred to Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, of said producer provided with rolls and gearing for the same, but the presentv invention is applicable to other arrangements and numbers of rolls,l In Fig. 1 aforesaid the rolls indicated have each an opposite roll forming a pair movable adjacent. In Fig. 2 the worm gearing isarranged to give opposite motions to the rolls b, b1 on rotation of driving shaft d throughout its length. But clutches di are indicated, for connectionof worms c1, c3 with shaft d, the putting out of gear of any one of which will result inthe corresponding roll being unaffected or incapable of movement.
In the example given, and referrino to Figs. 2 and 3, the shaft d has keyed to it a pair of ratchet wheels, e, el, the teeth of which are in opposite directions, and loosely vmounted yon said shaft is a plate device h, h1, supporting pawls la, k1, which are loosely and suitably mounted on cross shafts or bearing spanning across the gap between said parts h and L?. A shaft or spindle Z attached to the upper parts of *it and h1, is connected by connecting rod m to a pin fn of a crank upon .crank-shaft o, the latter assumed to be driven from asuitable source of power. r is a rider-plate device for the pawls lc, k1, which rider-plate is shown in Fig. 3 connected by link s to a tumbler lever t pivoted at t1 to a liXed pin suitably mounted.

The tumbler lever t is formed with a grooved upper part, along which a movable weight u may travel from one end to the other according to the position of said lever t after the manner of like tumbler device employed in fuel economizers with boiler plant.
Attached to shaft d is a sprocketwheel or the like k2 connected by positive driving c, c1 are respectivelyl worm means for example'a pitch chain k3 (Fig. 3) to a secondQgear wheelv is* lmounted upon and attached to shaft kf movablein bearings not indicated. Upon said shaft Vkf" is mounted eccentric fv, the opposite end of the rod of which is slotted as shown, and engages a pin t2 on lever t. Stops/w projecting from a suitable, part of the plant are indicated for restricting'thefextreme `positions of lever t aforesaid.
It will-be seen that y'with the rider'plate fr set-fas in the drawings, pawl 'cl lis capable of operating ratchetel, while pawl lc, restving von the surface of said plate r isplaced 'out' of action. 1 But the-intermittent movement of ratchetfel, through k2,/`c3, 104 -and-c5 results in an intermittentfmovement of the eccentric o so that/eventually the slotted end ofthe rod'of the latter pulls-upon pin 2 untily thelever tis, as a consequence,moved over the upright` position indicated by broken line, VWhen the weight u moves =or rolls by gravity-to 'theropposite end of the groove in the lever t. VIn this way, thev lever t is rapidly movedy to the'otherextreme of its `position Yas determined by one lof the stops w, 'andthe rider plate 1 is just as rapidly moved to release pawl k-and putV k1 ont'n ofaction. ' If however one of the clutches Z1 is out of gear, the roll affected is necessarily not reversed in motion by the change'above described. 'This mightl be desirable in those cases where the teeth of one roll come adjacent to a blank on an opposite roll of a pair. That isto say,--under such circumstances, one roll'couldfbe stationary andl the companion or opposite roll reversed only', whenvclearing of clinker isl desirable.
At is obvious however, that'rolls may be reversed in pairs,' bylomitting the clutches Z1 or like devices, and attaching the worms tofshaft d also,by suitable adjustment of the rider-pawl parts shown in Fig. 3, tlm extent ofreversemotion imparted to a roll :may `be varied, and the 'degree of forward motion similarly controlled.
' in those cases where, instead of aV pair of `opposite rolls, there is provided a single roll working in conjunction Vwith a fixed metal plate, and between which roll and plate the clinlrer is broken, only sa-id roll is required to be capable of forward and reverse motions as described.
Itis evident that various means may be adopted for operating or controllingthe rider-pawl device or equivalent, which rider I make no claim to per se; also the degrees of forward and lrelative reverse motions of the rolls whether independently or jointly controlled, may be varied, as well as the design lof parts involved.
In Fig. 2,-' the rolls are arranged to be driven at'diierent speeds Vofrotationfbut theymaybe arranged to rotate equally,by using lequal v gear wheels.
I claim:-
l. A .gas producer or furnace, pairs of gear-driven clinker crushing-rolls therein connected to operative mechanism vfor alternatelyy and partly reversing the revolutions of rolls in said pairs, connective mechanism automatically controlled for producing-said vreversalswof motion, substantially as'herein set forth.
2. Agas lproducer Vor furnace, pairs of cli-nlrer crushing rolls therein driven `'by yworm and wheel gearingf'theworingearing loosely mounted on controlledI revoluble shafting, clutches, on said shafting for connecting the same lto 'the worms aforesaid, ratchet wheels attached to said shafting with the=teeth ofone of a pair in the-opposite' direction tothe teeth of l the other of the fpair, rider pawlsffadjacent to said ratch-y ets for being lalternately in `gear with said ratchets each to reach; and for the purpose of driving the shaftingiaforesaid inl the one direction land thenin the'fother,a ipivoted frame carrying said rider-pawls and on which they are pivoted, said frame operated by connection to a source of power, a mountedcrank or eccentric driven from the shafting aforesaid, a loosely weighted and pivoted tumbler'lever, operated by the rod of said eccentric, and for=automatically causing -rst the one and then-the other ratchet pawl to lbe lin gear with its respective ratchet wheel, substantially as herein 'set forth.
