Description
SPECIFICATION
Packaging installation
The present invention relates to an installation for packing a load in a section of sheath made of a supple material, such as a film of plastics material.
A machine for packing a load in a section of sheath made of supple material, particularly a film of plastics material, is already known, which comprises a covering frame of larger section than the cross section of the load to be packed and a pleating device associated with the covering frame for progressively pleating a section of the sheath engaged on this frame, a magazine in which the section of pleated sheath is kept and means for displacing the covering frame and the vertical magazine along the load in order to surround this latter with the section of pleated sheath accumulated in the magazine and unpleated automatically in the course of this movement. Such a packing machine is described in French Patent No. 73 18756 filed on May 23, 1973.
The present invention relates more particularly to improvements in a machine of this type, with a view to obtaining a packing installation of which the possibilities of application are considerably increased.
To this end, this installation for packing a load in a section of sheath made of a supple material, particularly plastics material, comprising means for supplying sections of sheath, flat, means for opening the downstream end or each section of sheath, a pleating device for progressively pleating part of each section of sheath, this device comprising rotated members applied against the sheath and against support ramps located inside the sheath, a covering frame whose section is larger than the cross section of the load to be packed and adapted to bear the section of pleated sheath, and means for displacing the covering frame along the load in order to unpleat the section of sheath automatically in the course of this movement and deposit it around the load, is characterised in that the pleating device is offset laterally with respect to the load to be packed and means are provided for displacing the covering frame horizontally and vertically between the load and the pleating device so as to take each section of pleated sheath formed laterally by the pleating device, to guide it above the load then to lower it around the load, and finally to return the empty covering frame to the pleating device.
This packing installation according to the invention may comprise, for example, at least two pleating devices disposed on either side of the load to be packed and using sheaths of different dimensions in order to be able to pack loads having two different cross sections. Another arrangement, but with a plurality of rolls of films of the same dimensions, enables the same load to be covered with superposed covers of different natures. This application is particularly advantageous in the case of the installation being intended for packing such as tumblers, glasses, etc.... already grouped together under a heat-retractable film, for example made of polyethylene, to constitute sales units. These units are in turn stacked on pallets and the stack of these units is covered with an outer cover made of polyethylene covering all the stack. To avoid the outer polyethylene cover adhering to the prepacked sales units, a cover made of a plastics material having a higher melting point, for example polypropylene, is interposed at the same work station, by means of the packing installation according to the invention.
The laterally offset pleating device or devices may be placed either at the top or at ground level.
In the latter case, the accessibility of the pleating device is a certain advantage.
The principle of the pleated sheath may also be used with a station for forming a section of pleated sheath supplying, as required, a plurality of stations for constituting palettized loads.
The invention will be more readily understood on reading the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic view in elevation of an installation for packing a load comprising two pleating devices offset laterally with respect to the load to be packed and located at a level higher than this load.
Figure 2 is a schematic view in elevation of a packing installation according to the invention comprising a pleating device offset laterally with respect to the load to be packed and located at ground level.
Figure 3 is a schematic view in elevation of a packing installation comprising a pleated device offset laterally, at the top, and supplying sections of pleated sheath to three sections of sheaths.
Referring now to the drawings, the packing installation shown in Figure 1 is intended for packing a load 1 which may be constituted by a stack of articles placed on a pallet itself moved by a horizontal conveyor. This load may be packed by means of one or two sections of sheath cut out from two sheaths 2 and 3 and unwound flat from two respectively reels 4 and 5. These reels 4 and 5 are disposed laterally either at ground level, or at the top of the frame (not shown) of the packing installation. The two sheaths 2 and 3 are guided respectively, via guide rollers 6 of horizontal axes, through two pleating devices respectively designated as a whole by references 7 and 8.
These pleating devices 7 and 8 are offset laterally with respect to the load 1 and are located at a level higher than said load, as may be seen in
Figure 1. Above the two pleating devices 7 and 8 are respectively provided welding and cutting devices 9 and 10, of any known type, these devices essentially comprising mobile welding jaws controlled by a jack. These devices are used when covers are to be deposited on the load 1, i.e.
when the bottom ends of the cut sections of sheath cutout from the sheets 2, 3 are closed.
The pleating devices 7, 8 may be made in various ways. They generally comprise pleating members, such as rotated rollers which are applied against the section of sheath and against support ramps located inside the sheath, so as to form a section of pleated sheath. Pleating devices of this type are described in French Patent No.
73 18756 filed on May 23, 1973 and a detailed description thereof will not be given.
With the pleating devices 7 and 8 are associated respective mobile covering frames 11 and 12 which comprise templates whose dimensions correspond to the cross section of the load 1 having to be packed. These covering frames 11, 12 are mounted to move on the frame of the installation both in the horizontal and transverse direction and in the vertical direction, as indicated by the arrows.
The pleats of each section of pleated sheath may be formed either on the covering frames 11, 12 themselves, the latter then being located at the pleating sections, or on independent supports, such as retractable arms, each section of pleated sheath then being transferred to the template of the covering frame after introduction of the latter in the section of sheath.
The functioning will now be described of the installation according to the invention shown in
Figure 1 in the case of the load 1 having to be covered by two superposed covers, namely, for example, a first, inner, cover formed from the sheet 2 of polypropylene and a second, outer, cover formed from the sheet 3 of polyethylene.
A section of pleated polypropylene sheath, after having been cut out from the sheet 2, is firstly formed on the covering frame 11 or on arms independent of this frame. This section of pleated sheath is formed by the pleating device 7 located to the left. After the section of pleated polypropylene sheath has been formed on the covering frame 11, or after it has been transferred to this frame after having been formed on independent arms, the covering frame 11 is moved horizontally so as to bring it above the load
1 then it is lowered around this load, as indicated by the arrows. In the course of this descending movement, the section of pleated polypropylene sheath is progressively deposited around the load
1 which may comprise a stack of sales units (batches of glasses, tumblers, etc....) themselves already packed in polyethylene sheets.
Once the polypropylene cover has been deposited on the load 1, the covering frame 11 is raised and is again displaced towards the left, towards the pleating device 7, to enable it to receive a fresh section of pleated sheath.
After this phase, the same operation is carried out on the right-hand side of the installation, employing the pleating device 8. The latter then forms on independent arms or directly on the covering frame 12, a section of pleated polyethylene sheath, this section being, in this case, separated from the sheath 13. In the same way, the covering frame 12 bearing the section of pleated polyethylene sheath is then displaced to be brought above the load 1 then it is lowered so as to deposit a second, outer, cover of polyethylene, over the cover of polypropylene already in position.
When the load 1 is then passed in a heatretraction oven, for example, the intermediate cover of polypropylene which has a relatively high melting point, prevents any adhesion between the outer polyethylene cover and the stacked units themselves packed in sheets of polyethylene.
The covers superposed on the same load 1 may be made of materials of different nature or may have undergone different treatments or have different thicknesses. The installation according to the invention shown in Figure 1 may also be used for packing loads on pallets 1 having different cross sections (for example on pallets measuring 800 x 1000 and 1000 x 1200 mm). In this case, the sheath 2 has dimensions corresponding to one type of pallet, whilst the other sheath 3 has dimensions corresponding to other types of pallets.
According to a variant embodiment, the two pleating devices 7 and 8 as well as the devices supplying the respective sheaths 2 and 3 may be mounted on the same frame mounted to move horizontally and transversely on the frame of the installation. In this way, a section of pleated sheath having a particular nature or dimensions may be formed, by means of one of the pleating devices 7 and 8, offset laterally with respect to the load 1, whilst the other pleating device is located above the load 1 and the corresponding covering frame ensures the deposit on this load 1 of the section of pleated sheath formed previously, in the course of its downward movement.Once this operation is terminated, the mobile frame may then be moved horizontally and transversely so as to bring the first pleating device above the load, whilst the second device is offset laterally to allow the formation by the latter of another section of pleated sheath, whilst the section of pleated sheath previously formed on the first pleating device is deposited on the load 1 to form a cover.
Although it has been indicated in the aforedescribed embodiments that the installation comprised two pleating devices 7, 8 located on either sides of the load 1, it is obvious that more may be provided in order to increase the possibilities of using the installation with a view to covering palletized loads 1 with covers having different natures and/or dimensions.
Figure 2 illustrates an installation for packing a load 1 on a pallet comprising a pleating device 13 offset laterally with respect to the load 1 and located at ground level. There again, each section of pleated sheath which is formed from a flat sheath 14 is transferred by means of a covering frame 1 5 which follows the path indicated by the arrows. This covering frame 1 5 is engaged vertically upwardly in the pleating device 1 3 to receive the section of pleated sheath formed by the latter, then it is displaced laterally in the direction of the load 1 then raised to a level higher than the load, brought thereabove, after which it descends along the load, depositing thereon a section of pleated sheath. At the end of the descending stroke, substantially at ground level, the covering frame 1 5 is then offset horizontally and laterally so as to be returned below the pleating device 13.
The installation shown in Figure 2 increases the rhythm of functioning, as the covering frame 15 rises outside the covering station proper, whilst a similar frame 1 5 descends from this covering station to deposit a cover on a load 1 located thereat.
Figure 3 illustrates another variant embodiment of the packing installation which comprises one pleating device 1 6 only for making sections of pleated sheath adapted to be deposited by covering frames 20 which are mounted to move horizontally and vertically. Each covering frame 20 is engaged in the pleating device 1 6 where it takes over a section of pleated sheath previously formed. This frame 20 is then displaced horizontally until it comes above one of the loads 1 having to be packed, after which means are provided to take over this frame 20 and lower it around the load 1, which brings about the deposit of the section of pleated sheath as in the preceding cases.
According to the invention, the installation shown in Figure 3 may comprise only one covering frame 20 supplying the various stations 17, 18, 19 where the covers are deposited on the loads 1.
In all the embodiments of the invention which have been described, the frame of the installation naturally bears rolling or guide backs for the covering frames as well as members for driving these frames, such as fingers borne by endless chains driven by motors. Any well known drive mechanism used in handling installations may be used for moving the covering frames 1 5.
