Abstract

Planes, construction of; framework.-A metal wing for an aeroplane is built up by attaching front and rear shaping portions 3, 4, Fig. 1, to a central box girder 2 comprising front and rear spars 7, 8, connected at intervals by stiffening bulkheads, braces, or frames, and provided with reinforced top and bottom skin plates 5, 6. The spars 7, 8 may be plates formed with apertures 13, Fig. 6, to reduce their weight or may be constituted by flanged channel members 15, Fig. 8, connected by inclined channeled braces 16. Figs. 4 and 6 show stiffening frames each comprising two vertical bars 14 riveted through brackets 19 to the spars 7, 8, upper and lower cross bars 17, 18 riveted through brackets 11 to the plates 5, 6, and cross-braces 9 riveted to the bars 14, 17, 18. The spars 7, 8 are riveted to the plates 5, 6 through brackets 12. Reinforcing channel members 10 are riveted to the inner faces of the plates 5, 6.
