Abstract
497,413. Mounting a plane on a flying- boat hull. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 17, 1937, No. 7820. Void. Convention date, March 17, 1936. [Class 4] A flying -boat or boat amphibian, has a single plane 12, Fig. 6, connected to a hull 10 by a superstructure 14. Plane 12 comprises main spars 26, 28, Fig. 5, which are aligned with transverse bulkheads 30, 32 respectively. Each bulkhead comprises a U-shaped former 38, Fig. 3, connected at its ends to bottom ribs 40, 42 spaced above. A deck beam 46 spaced above and braced to the ribs is connected at its ends to former 38 and centrally to a keel 44. Above beam 46 is disposed a series of vertical and horizontal bracing members secured at points of intersection by gussets. A door aperture is shown at 72. The plane mounting means comprise diagonal members 78, 80 of which the upper ends terminate at a point above the hull where they are attached to the spar. Members 78, 80 may each comprise a pair of angle-irons riveted one on each side of the bulkhead and embracing a flange plate 86 at the upper end, Fig. 4. The flanges of plate 86 are secured by bolts 90 to the lower flanges 92 of the spar. Resilient spacer members 94 and 96 respectively are placed between the flanges of plate 86 and the spar and between flanges 92 and pressure plates 98. A U-shaped saddle plate 100 is secured to the upper ends of members 78 and 80 and is connected by side plates 102 to vertical truss member 104 of the spar. Between the main bulkheads 30, 32 are light frame members 34, 36 also connected to the plane by extensions 110 which are secured relatively to each other and the bulkheads by a horizontal member 112. A fairing 118 of aerofoil section is built up on horizontal and vertical rib members and may include a removable panel. The plane may be braced as shown in Fig. 6. The empennage may be mounted above the hull by means of a superstructure similar to that described.
