Abstract
447,459. Aircraft wings. DORNIER METALLBAUTEN GES., and DORNIER, C., Friedrichshafen, Germany. July 19, 1935, No. 20635. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1934. [Class 4] An aircraft sustaining wing comprises composite, hollow front and rear spars directly connected by bending and torsion-resisting, obliquely-disposed, trussed, lattice-work frames 21, the upper and lower surfaces of which conform to the profile of the wing. As shown, the spars are formed of channel members 13, 14 and 16, 17 and the nose of the wing is formed by connecting to the front spar a hollow member 15 adapted to resist bending and torsion stresses, the rear spar being connected by a similar hollow member 18 to a rigid rear part 19 of the wing and to an aileron 20. The spars and the frames 21 enclose triangular spaces adapted to be covered by rigid triangular plates 22 which abut on the frame edges and are fixed thereto by rivets &c. When the frames 21 are too narrow to provide for two adjacent rows of rivets &c., the abutting edges of two adjacent plates 22 may be waved or similarly formed in order that the rivets &c. may be in the same straight line. The member 18 may be formed to provide a slot in front of the aileron 20 or to conform to the shape of the forward end of the aileron.
