Abstract

206,280. Brooks, T., and Woods- Gilbert Rail Remodelling Co., Ltd. Aug. 23, 1922. Railway and tramway rails, trueing and surfacing in situ.-A portable machine has a frame supporting the grinding-wheel and operative parts and held to the rails by feet fitted on the cores of electromagnets and adapted to adhere to the top surface of a rail. The frame comprises two members 16 connected by members 17, which are connected to, or integral with, the cores 14 of electromagnets 13. The members 16 act as guides for two carriers 1 upon which are secured screw-blocks 18 engaging respectively right and left handed threads on a spindle 11 operated by a hand-wheel 19. Pivoted on the blocks are arms 8, which at their lower ends are connected to a bearing 9 for the spindle 20 of a grinding-wheel 10; by rotation of the spindle 11, the pressure of the grinding-wheel upon the rail may be varied. The carriers 1 and the grinding-wheel are traversed to and fro along the members 16 by a nut mounted in one of the carriers and a screw 4 supported by the members 17. The nut is rotated, through worm-gearing 24, 25 and a belt or chain 22, by the spindle 20. The spindle 20 is driven through a flexible shaft by an electric motor, and the direction of traverse and of rotation of the grinding-wheel may be reversed by reversal of the motor. A support 26 carrying an electromagnet resting on the other rail may be provided; the feet on the magnet cores may be locked to the rails by levers 15. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement of the frame whereby the grinding-wheel is traversed by hand-operated gearing.
