Abstract

A fastening for securing e.g. hook 1 and eye 2 to a garment, comprises a base 4, and at least two spikes 5, 5 projecting from the base 4 for driving through the garment. Each of the spikes 5 has a groove 7 extending longitudinally thereof. After being driven through a garment, the spike is clenched at its pointed end to take a hasp at the underside of the garment. The groove is formed preferably by cold pressing so that the spike is made harder in a region around the groove than other regions thereof. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Fastenings for garments The present invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to a fastening for securing hook and eye, button, ornaments, etc. to a garment, the fastening having at least two spikes projecting from a base for driving through the garment.
Japanese Utility Model Publication (Jikkosho) No.
42-11692 discloses a fastening in the form of a staple having a pair of planar spikes projecting from a base for driving through a garment. After being driven through a garment, the spikes are clenched at their pointed end portions to take a hasp at the underside of the garment. However, the spikes (Figures 12 and 13) have a rectangular transverse cross-section (Figure 14); that is, they are relatively easily bendable when piercing the garment. Furthermore, such spikes are easily unbendable after being clenched.
This is why the prior art fastening has not been so useful, especially for a garment made of twilled thick fabric such as jean or denim.
According to Japanese Utility Model Publication (Jikkosho) No.42-11691, the spikes (Figures 15 and 16) have an arcuate transverse cross-section (Figure 17) to offer an increased degree of stiffness against bending. But the arcuate spikes, when clenched, would have a rectangular cross-section at clenched portions and, therefore, are easily unbendable after clenched. Moreover, the prior spikes are substantially flat just at pointed end portions 10 and hence are easily bendable when piercing the garment.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an improved fastening, for a garment, having at least two spikes which are hard to bend when piercing the garment and hard to unbend after being clenched.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a fastening, for a garment, which is usable even in the case where garment has been made of twilled thick fabric such as jean or denim.
According to another aspect of the presentinven- tion, a fastening for a garment comprises a base, and at least two spikes projecting from the base for driving through the garment, each of the spikes having a groove extending longitudinally thereof, the groove being formed by cold pressing so that the spike is made harder in a region around the groove than other regions thereof.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a fastening for a garment, comprising: (a) a base; and (b) at least two spikes projecting from said base for driving through the garment, each of said spikes having a groove extending longitudinally thereof and being harder in a region around said groove than other regions thereof.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a fastening for a garment, comprising: (a) abase; and (b) at least two spikes projecting from said base for driving through the garment, each of said spikes having a groove formed by pressing and extending longitudinally thereof.
Advantages, features and objects of the present invention will become manifest to those versed in the art upon making reference to the detailed description and the accompanying drawings in whidh preferred embodiments of the present invention are shown by way of illustrative example. In the drawings:: Figure 1 is a perspective view of hook and eye, each having a fastening means according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a stud having fastening means according to the invention; Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary front view of a spike according to a first embodiment; Figure 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along line V-V of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing a spike according to a second embodiment; Figure 7 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 6; Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view taken along line VIII-VIII of Figure 6; Figure 9 is a view similar to Figures 3 and 6, but showing a spike according to a third embodiment; Figure 10 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 9;; Figure 11 is a cross-sectional view taken along line Xl-Xl of Figure 9; Figure 12 is a fragmentary front view of a prior art spike; Figure 13 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 12; Figure 14 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 12; Figure 15 is a view similarto Figure 12, but showing another prior art spike; Figure 16 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 15; and Figure 17 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the spike of Figure 15.
Like reference numerals denote similar parts throughout the drawings.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate hook and eye members 1, 2, and a stud 3, each having fastening means according to the present invention. The fastening means includes a base 4 and at least two spikes 5, 5 (the number of the spikes is not pertinent here) projecting perpendicularly from the base 4 for driving through a garment (not shown) to which the hook and eye members 1, 2 and stud 3 are to be attached.
After driving through a garment, each of the spikes 5 is usually clenched at its pointed end portion 6 to take a hasp (not shown) at the underside of the garment.
As better shown in Figures 3 and 4, the spike 5 has a groove 7 extending centrally and longitudinally thereof. The groove 7 has a rectangular cross section (Figure 5).
According to a second embodiment shown in Fig ures 6 to 8, the groove 7 has a triangular crosssection. The groove may be of a semi-circular cross-section.
In the preceding embodiments, the groove 7 ter minates short of a tip 8 of the spike 5. Alternatively, the groove 7 may extend all the way to the tip 8 of the spikes, as shown in Figures 9 to 11. Furthermore, the groove 7 may be formed in either one side of the spike 5.
As the groove 7 is formed preferably by cold pressing, the spike 5 is made harder in a region around the groove 7 than other regions thereof. Cold pressing of the spike 5 increases the yield and tensile strength of the spike 5 and reduces the ductility of the same. With the groove 7, furthermore, the spike 5 has such a transverse cross-sectional shape which renders the spike 5 resistant to bending especially when it is driven through a relatively thick piece of fabric.
Accordingly, the spike 5 is hard to bend when piercing a garment and hard to unbend after being clenched, making the fastening means capable of securing hook and eye members, stud, button, etc.
to a garment easily and properly with increased degree offirmness even if the garment has been made of twilled thick fabric such as jean or denim.
Although various minor modifications may be suggested by those versed in the art, it should be understood that we wish to embcdy within the scope of the patent warranted hereon, all such embodiments as reasonably and properly come within the scope ofthis contribution to the art.
