Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A fastening for securing hook and eye, stud, button, etc.
to a garment, comprising a base, and at least two spikes project-ing from the base for driving through the garment. Each of the spikes has a groove extending longitudinally thereof. After being driven through a garment, the spike is clenched at its pointed end to take a hasp at the underside of the garment. The groove is formed preferably by cold pressing so that the spike is made harder in a region around the groove than other regions thereof.

Japanese Utility Model Publication (Jikkosho) No.

42-11692 discloses a fastening in the form of a staple haviny a .......
`~ pair of planar spikes projecting from a base for driving through , a garment. After being driven through a garment, the spikes are i clenched at their pointed end portions to take a hasp at the underside of the garment. However, the spikes (Figures 12 and 13) have a rectangular transver6e cross-section (Figure 14);
that is, they are relatively easily bendable when piercing the garment. Furthermore, such spikes are easily unbendable after being clenched. This is why the priox art fastening has not been so useful, especially for a garment made of twiiled thick ; - fabric such as jean or denim.
According to Japanese Utility Model Publication (Jikkosho) No. 42-11691, the spikes l~igures 15 and 16) have - -~535~J4 ~n arcuate transverse cross-sectisn ~igure 17) to offer an increased degree of stiffness against bending. But ~he arcuate spikes, when clenched, would have a rectangular csoss-~ection at clenched portions and, therefore, are easily unbendable after clenched. Moreover, the prior spikes are substantially flat just at pointed end portions 10 and hence are easily bendable when piercing the garment.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved fastening, for a garment, having at least two spikes which are hard to bend when piercing the garment and hard to unbend after being clenched.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening, for a garment, which is usable even in the case where garment has been made of twilled thick fabric such as jean or denim.
- According to the present invention, a fastening for a garment comprises a base, and at least two spikes projecting from the base for driving through the garment, each of the spikes having a groove extending longitudinally thereof. The groove is formed by cold pressing so that the spike is made harder in a region around the groove than other regions thereof.
Many other advantages, features and additional objects of the present invention will become manifest to those versed in the art upon making reference to the detailed description and the accompanying drawings in which preferred embodiments incorporating the principles of the present invention are shown by way of illustrative example.
Like reference numerals refer to like parts through-11535~)4 out the representation ~hown in Figures 1 through 11.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate hook and eye members 1, 2, and a stud 3, each having fastening means according to the present invention. The fastening means includes a base 4 and at least two spikes 5,5 (the number of the spikes is not pertinent here) projecting perpendicularly from the base 4 for driving through a garment (not ~hown) to which the hook and eye members 1, 2 and stud 3 are to be attached. After drîving through a garment, each of the spikes 5 is usually clenched at its pointed end portion 6 to take a hasp (not shown) at the underside of the garment.
As better shown in Figures 3 and 4, the spike 5 has a groove 7 extending centrally and longitudinally thereof. The groove 7 has a rectangular cross-section (Figure 5).
According to a second embodiment shown in Figures 6 to 8, the groove 7 has a triangular cross-section. The groove ,., may be of a semi-circular cross-section.
In the preceding embodiments, the groove 7 terminates short of a tip 8 of the spike 5. Alternatively, the groove 7 may extend all the way to the tip 8 of the spike 5, as shown in Figures 9 to 11. Furthermore, the groove 7 may be formed in either one side of the spike 5.
As the groove 7 is formed preferably by cold pressing, the spike 5 is made harder in a region around the groove 7 than other regions thereof. Cold pressing of the spike 5 increases the yield and tensile strength of the spike 5 and reduces the ductility of the same. With the groove 7, furthermore, the spike S has such a transverse cross-sectional sh~pe which , ~L1535~4 renders the spike 5 xesistant to bending especially when it is driven through a relatively thick piece of fabric.
Accordingly, the spike 5 is hard to bend when piercing a garment and hard to unbend after being clenched, making the ~astening means capable of securing ho~k and eye members, 6tud, button, etc. to a yarment easily and properly with increased degree of firmness even if the garment has been made of twilled thick fabric such as jean or denim.
Although various minor modifications may be suggested by those versed in the art, it ~hould be understood that I wish to embody within the scope of the patent warranted hereon, all such embodiments as reasonably and properly come within the scope of my contribution to the art.
