Description

SPECIFICATION Hinge Fastening for Motor Vehicle Doors The invention relates to a hinge fastening for motor vehicle doors in which a flap-type hinge consisting of two hinge flaps pivotably connected with one another by a hinge pin is firmly connected by its one hinge flap in the usual way with the vehicle door and is detachably fastenable by its other flap by means of threaded bolts to a fastening element secured on the door frame of the vehicle bodywork.
Hinge fastenings of this type of construction are used for removable hinges of motor vehicle doors and serve primarily so that the vehicle door can be inserted and aligned in the initial construction of the vehicle bodywork.
The invention is based upon the problem of producing a hinge fastening of the stated kind of construction for motor vehicle doors which permits, with minimum possible production and assembly expenditure, that motor vehicle doors once adjusted in the initial construction of the vehicle bodywork may be installed in their originally adjusted position even in the case of a subsequent second fitting, without particular expenditure of labour or particular expenditure on technical equipment being necessary for this purpose. More especially the hinge fastening to be produced is to render possible the fitting and removal of vehicle doors at any desired time in the exact original adjusted position in each case.
In accordance with the invention this problem is essentially solved in that guide faces are formed which are arranged in alternation on the securing element and on the hinge flap, slide on one another in the assembly of the hinge fastening and are directed perpendicularly of the mutual abutting faces of securing element and hinge flap.
These guide faces are preferably formed by interengaging protuberances and recesses on the one hand on the securing element and on the other on the hinge flap, and are expediently made independent of the devices for securing the hinge flap on the securing element.
Thus the threaded bolts serving for the securing of the hinge flap on the securing element can be kept free from all guidance tasks and the hinge flap on the door frame side and thus the door as a whole can be secured, both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, exactly in the originally aligned and adjusted position on the securing part. The original adjustment, which according to the invention is also final, of the vehicle door therefore takes place exclusively by way of the correspondingly equipped parts, hinge flap and securing element on the door frame of the vehicle bodywork. If the securing element is secured to the door frame of the vehicle bodywork in the conventional manner, for example by means of spot or projection welding, then it can be assumed that it is secured nondisplaceably there and there is no fear of subsequent variation of its position. Thus on the other hand it is guaranteed that guide faces formed in automation on securing element and hinge flap reliably and at all times have the consequence that the vehicle door, to be fitted newly, can be fitted precisely in the position as originally aligned and adjusted. The guide faces here, according to a preferred form of embodiment, can be formed on the one hand by a slot aperture arranged on the securing element with rectangular outline form and on the other by a tab which is cut free on the edge of a hinge flap rolled from sheet metal, protruding beyond this edge, and angled off at right angles to the plane of the hinge leaf. The outline form of the aperture in the securing element here of course corresponds to the cross-sectional form of the tab cut free on the hinge flap, so that when the hinge fastening is joined together both parts interengage as guide, with slight play. To facilitate the introduction of the cut free tab of the hinge flap serving as guide element into the slot aperture of the securing element, the end of the tab cut free from the hinge flap edge is expediently of arcuate configuration.According to a further feature of the invention it is proposed that on the one hand the securing element is formed by a sheet metal pressing having guide faces offset perpendicularly to one another and supported on one another by lateral smooth-faced flange walls, and on the other hand marginal zones are arranged on the edges, extending perpendicular of the hinge axis, of the hinge flap leaf, perpendicularly of the plane of the latter.
In this form of embodiment of the invention it is permissible that the angled marginal zones, extending perpendicularly of the hinge axis, of the hinge flap leaf possess a certain greater play in relation to the counter-faces associated with them than is the case in the side faces, cooperating as guide faces with one another, on the one hand of the aperture of slot form in the securing element and on the other hand of the angled tab on the hinge flap leaf. It is also to be emphasised here that the angled marginal zones of the hinge flap leaf in the assembling of the hinge fastening take over a guidance role with regard to the vertical orientation of the vehicle door, while the angled tab at the end of the hinge flap leaf takes over the adjustment of the position of the hinge axis in the horizontal direction.
According to another form of realisation of the invention the securing element can be formed by an angle profile section and provided with pins protruding beyond the support surface for the hinge flap leaf and shaped in domed form at their free ends, which pins in the assembly of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with counterfaces formed by bore apertures in the hinge flap leaf. In this case due to a spherically domed configuration of the end faces of the pins forming the guide faces the assembling of the hinge fastening is considerably facilitated. The guide faces here do not necessarily have to be formed by pins or the like arranged on the securing elements, but rather according to another feature of the invention can equally be formed by the fact that protuberances of peg form formed on the hinge flap leaf by means of sheet metal punchings, co-operate in the assembly of the hinge fastening as guide faces with bore apertures forming counter-faces arranged in the securing element. Fundamentally of course pins or pegs forming guide faces can also be arranged specially on the hinge flap leaf.
According to another form of realisation of the invention it is provided that in the assembly of the hinge fastening, tabs angled off at right angles to the abutment face of the hinge flap leaf and cut free from the two mutually opposite ends of a fastening element of trestle form shaped from a sheet metal blank co-operate as guide faces with the end faces of the hinge flap leaf forming the counter-faces.Since with such a configuration of the guide means of the securing element or hinge flap leaf only the adjustment of the hinge flap leaf in the vertical direction is guaranteed, it can in this case additionally be provided that either a protuberance oriented parallel to the hinge axis of the hinge flap leaf engages in a corresponding aperture of the fastening element or conversely a corresponding protuberance of the fastening element engages in a corresponding aperture of the hinge flap leaf, and thus guarantees fixing of the position of the hinge flap leaf in relation to the fastening element in the horizontal direction as well.
According to a further form of realisation of the invention the fastening element can consist of a section of flat material of great material thickness, the smooth side faces of which in the assembly of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with counter-face-forming marginal zones of the hinge flap leaf set perpendicularly to the plane thereof, and further that a tab offset perpendicularly of the plane of the hinge flap leaf and cut free from the free longitudinal edge of the latter engages as guide member for the horizontal orientation of the hinge axis in relation to the vehicle bodywork in an aperture of the fastening element having a rectangular outline.
In the case of a fastening element having a Ushaped profile cross-section its upwardly extending profile legs can be used in the assembly of the hinge fastening as guide faces and for cooperation with corresponding counter-faceforming side faces of a hinge flap formed by a flat material section of great material thickness, in the sense of a guidance of the hinge flap for the purpose of maintenance of the original adjustment of the vehicle door.
Of course the reversal of this form of configuration of the invention is also possible and lies within the scope of the present invention.
In the case of constricted installation conditions caused by the design of the vehicle bodywork a rigid and non-detachable securing of the fastening element on the door frame of the vehicle bodywork can sometimes be unfavourable with regard to the easy installability and removability of the vehicle door in a predetermined adjusted position.
In such cases according to the invention it is proposed that a fastening element formed essentially as flat plate, preferably a sheet metal plate or flat material plate of great material thickness, is securable by means of a first set of threaded bolts on the door frame of the vehicle bodywork and the hinge flap of the flap-type hinge on the door frame side is securable by means of a second set of threaded bolts on the fastening element, the apertures in the hinge flap or in the fastening element allocated to the one or the other set of threaded bolts having an excess dimension in relation to the shank diameters of the threaded bolts, and one of the parts of the hinge fastening is made fast in a specific orientation in relation to the other fastening part or to the door frame of the vehicle bodywork from the outset by means forming guide faces interengaging in positive manner by shape.Due to the fact that the fastening element is formed by a substantially flat sheet metal plate, firstly the installation space requirement of the hinge fastening is considerably reduced in relation to the previously proposed construction type. Since moreover both the fastening element on the door frame of the vehicle bodywork and the hinge flap on the fastening element are secured each by a set of threaded bolts, in the case of the individual configuration of the hinge fastening account can be taken of the installation conditions determined in each case by the vehicle bodywork, to the effect that according to the form of configuration the positional adjustment of the vehicle door is carried out either by diminishing adjustments of a specific position of the hinge leaf in relation to the fastening element, or by diminishing adjustments of a specific position of the fastening element in relation to the door frame of the vehicle bodywork. A subsequent displacement of the set adjusted position of the vehicle door is excluded in both cases, since in the case where the hinge flap leaf in the adjustment of the door position is aligned in relation to the fastening element, the fastening element is connectable through means interengaging in shape-locking manner with the door frame and forming guide faces, exclusively in a quite specific orientation determined from the outset, and in the dismantling of the vehicle door it is necessary only for the fastening element to be detached from the door frame, the mutual fixing of hinge flap leaf and fastening element remains unaffected thereby. In the case where the adjustment of the vehicle door is effected by diminishing adjustments to a specific mutual position between fastening element of the door frame, the hinge flap leaf engages through means forming guide faces interengaging in shapelocking manner in a quite specific orientation, fixed from the outset, in the fastening element, and in the dismantling of the door only the hinge flap leaf is detached from the fastening element, so that in every subsequent assembly the vehicle door must necessarily be reattached to the fastening element in the predetermined orientation, the fastening element remaining, as regards its position orientated in relation to the door frame of the vehicle bodywork, unaffected by the fitting and dismantling of the vehicle door.In order to permit adjustment of the vehicle door in any desired direction in relation to the vehicle bodywork it is provided in accordance with the invention that the apertures, either in the hinge flap leaf or in the fastening element, which have an excess dimension in relation to the shank diameter of the threaded bolts and are allocated to the one set of threaded bolts, have a square outline form the height and width of which is preferably only slightly less than the interval of mutually opposite edges of a screw head formed as hexagon. A similar dimensioning of the apertures ofexcess dimension of course results for each other form of the head of the threaded bolt utilised. The fastening element is here made fast in a predetermined orientation in relation to the door frame of the vehicle bodywork by means interengaging in shape-locking manner and forming guide faces, and the reaching of the adjustment position of the vehicle door by diminishing adjustments is effected by a corresponding orientation of the hinge flap leaf in relation to the fastening element. In this case two guides of pin form, expediently formed by simple piercings, are arranged at an interval from one another on a flat fastening element of plate form preferably formed by a sheet metal material blank, with which guides there are associated corresponding bore apertures in the wall of the door frame, forming counter-faces. The position of the fastening element is determined in relation to the door frame from the outset and nondisplaceably by these guides of pin form.Of course in this case the threaded bolts serving for the securing of the fastening element here in turn likewise form guide faces, so that if threaded bolts and guides are appropriately arranged an incorrect assembly is precluded. The bores for the threaded bolts serving for the securing of the fastening element to the door frame are expediently arranged, in relation to the hinge flap longitudinal axis, directly opposite to one another and the guides of pin form are expediently arranged diagonally opposite to one another, so that even when possible tolerances are taken into consideration an oblique position of the fastening element on second or subsequent assembly is precluded.
It is further provided in accordance with the invention that a hinge flap can be made fast in any desired orientation on the fastening element, which can be made fast in a specific orientation on the door post, by means of a second set of threaded bolts and by means of apertures having an excess dimension, the threaded bolts of the second set penetrating apertures in the hinge flap which have an excess dimension in relation to their shank diameter.Since in this case the bolts connecting the hinge flap leaf with the fastening element are no longer released in the removal of the door, according to a further feature of the invention it can be provided that the hinge flap leaf, after adjustment of the vehicle door in a specific position corresponding to the adjusted position of the door hinge axis, is additionally made fast on the fastening element by means of tack welding, so that even slackening by oversight of the bolts connecting the hinge flap with the fastening element still cannot lead to a variation of the adjusted position of the vehicle door.
According to another form of realisation of the invention it is provided that a fastening element of plate form consisting of a flat sheet metal material blank can be made fast on the door post of the vehicle bodywork through a first set of threaded bolts by means of apertures having an excess dimension in relation to the shank diameter of the bolts, and comprises bore apertures forming guide faces for guides of pin form forming counter-faces, arranged on the hinge flap and expediently formed by simple piercing of the hinge flap leaf.In this form of embodiment the hinge flap leaf is detachably connected with the fastening element and therefore made fast, on the one hand through means interengaging in shape-locking manner, such as guides of pin form and bore apertures, and on the other hand by means of the position of the threaded bolts, in a non-displaceable association, specified from the outset, in relation to the fastening element. To secure this exact mutual orientation of hinge flap leaf and fastening element even taking account of certain tolerances, in accordance with the invention the bores for the threaded bolts of the second set, which serve for the securing of the hinge flap leaf on the fastening element, are arranged in the longitudinal axis of the hinge flap leaf, and the guides of pin form and bores on the hinge flap leaf and in the fastening element are arranged mutually diagonally oppositely in relation to the hinge flap longitudinal axis.
Furthermore in this case the fastening element can be made fast in its adjusted position nondisplaceably on the door post of the vehicle bodywork, by a tack weld in addition to the threaded bolts. Thus even disengagement of the bolts connecting the fastening element with the door post, due to oversight, cannot lead to a variation of the adjusted position of the door to be fitted afresh.
The invention is described in greater detail in the following exemplary description by reference to several examples of embodiment illustrated in the drawing, wherein:- Figure 1 shows a sectional representation of a hinge fastening for motor vehicle doors in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a plan view of a hinge fastening formed in accordance with the invention, according to Figure 1, for motor vehicle doors; Figure 3 shows a sectional representation of another form of realisation of a hinge fastening according to the invention for motor vehicle doors; Figure 4 shows another form of realisation of a hinge fastening according to the invention for motor vehicle doors; Figure 5 shows a partial view from beneath of a hinge flap leaf for a hinge fastening according to Figure 4;; Figure 6 shows a partial sectional representation of another form of realisation of a hinge fastening according to the invention for motor vehicle doors; Figure 7 shows a sectional representation of a further hinge fastening according to the invention for motor vehicle doors; Figure 8 shows a sectional representation of an especially preferred form of realisation of a hinge fastening for motor vehicle doors according to the present invention; Figure 9 shows a partial plan view of Figure 8; Figure 10 shows a partial sectional representation of a further form of realisation of a hinge fastening according to the invention for motor vehicle doors; Figure 11 shows a partial lateral elevation of Figure 10; Figure 12 shows a partial sectional representation of the hinge fastening according to Figure 10;; Figure 13 shows a plan view of a hinge fastening according to the invention when fitted; Figure 14 shows a section through Figure 13 along the line A-B; Figure 15 shows a section through the form of embodiment according to Figure 13 along the line C-D; Figure 1 6 shows a plan view of another form of embodiment of a hinge fastening in accordance with the invention; Figure 17 shows a section through the form of embodiment according to Figure 16 along the line E-F; Figure 1 8 shows a section through the form of embodiment according to Figure 16 along the line G-H.
Afastening element 2 is non-displaceably attached to a door frame 1, represented partially only in Figures 1 and 3, of a motor vehicle bodywork, in known and conventional manner, for example by means of spot or projection welding.
A hinge flap leaf 5 of the one hinge flap of a flaptype hinge having two hinge flaps 5 and 7 mutually pivotably connected by means of a hinge pin 6 is secured to the fastening element 2 by means of threaded bolts 3 and possibly nuts 4.
The other hinge flap 7 of the flap-type hinge is secured in likewise conventional manner and normally non-detachably to the vehicle door 8. In the example of embodiment as shown in Figures 1 and 2 the fastening element 2 is formed by a sheet metal pressing having securing faces 10 and 11 offset perpendicularly in relation to one another and mutually supported by lateral flange walls 9. In the assembling of the hinge fastening the hinge flap leaf 5 and the fastening element 2 are guided mutually by means of guide faces directed perpendicularly of their mutual abutment faces, in such a way that the vehicle door 8 to be fitted afresh subsequently must necessarily be fitted in the original position adjusted in the initial construction of the bodywork. These guide faces are formed on the one hand by a slot aperture 12 with rectangular outline arranged on the fastening element and on the other by a tab 14 cut free on the edge 13 of a hinge flap 5 rolled from sheet metal, protruding beyond this edge, and angled off at right angles to the hinge leaf plane. The end 1 5 of the tab 14 cut free from the hinge leaf edge 13 is distinguished here by an arcuate marginal contour configuration. The making fast of the hinge axis 6 in the horizontal direction in its original adjustment is guaranteed by the tab 14.
The making fast of the hinge axis in the vertical direction is here guaranteed by the fact that on the margins of the hinge flap leaf 5 extending perpendicularly of the hinge axis there are arranged marginal zones 1 6 offset perpendicularly of the plane of the leaf, which in the assembling of the hinge fastening slide as guide faces on the lateral flange walls 9 of the fastening element 2 forming the counter-faces.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figure 3 the fastening element 2 is formed by an angle profile section and provided with pins 18 of spherical domed form at their free ends 1 7, protruding beyond the abutment face for the hinge flap leaf 5, which pins in the assembly of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with counter-faces formed by bore apertures 1 9 in the hinge flap leaf 5. In this case the hinge flap 5 is manufactured from a hinge section and possesses an adequate wall thickness of the hinge flap leaf in order to accommodate adequate lengths of bore apertures 19 serving as counterfaces to the guide faces of the pins 18.The two pins 1 8 forming guide faces and the associated bore apertures 19 guarantee a mutual adjustment and orientation of hinge flap lead 5 and fastening element 2 independent of the securing screws 3, so that in re-installation the vehicle door 8 is necessarily oriented in its position once adjusted, independently of the fastening screws 3.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 the fastening element 2 is formed by a flat material section of great material thickness, the smooth side faces 20 of which in the assembly of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with marginal zones 21 of the hinge flap leaf 5 which are set perpendicularly of its plane and form counter-faces, and in which furthermore a tab 23 cut free on the free longitudinal margin 22 of the hinge flap leaf 5 and offset perpendicularly of its plane engages as guide member in an aperture 24, having a rectangular outline, of the fastening element 2.
Thus it is guaranteed that the door to be fitted afresh subsequently is secured as regards its hinge axis, both in the horizontal and in the vertical direction, in accordance with its original adjustment on the door frame 1 of the vehicle bodywork.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figure 6 the fastening element 2 has a U-shaped profile cross-section, its upright profile legs 25 co-operating in the assembly of the hinge fastening as guide faces with the side faces 26, forming corresponding counter-faces, of a hinge flap 5 formed by a flat material section of great material thickness. With such a configuration of the hinge fastening according to the invention the adjustment of the vehicle door and of the hinge flap 5 and thus of the hinge axis 6 in the horizontal direction can also be effected by the fastening screws 3, so that the guidance of the hinge flap 5 on the fastening element 2 by means of the profile legs 25 is adequate in the vertical direction.
A similar manner of fastening is illustrated in Figure 7, according to which the hinge flap leaf 5 having a U-shaped profile cross-section cooperates, by its downwardly pointing profile legs 27, in the assembling of the hinge fastening, after the manner of guide faces with corresponding fastening elements 2 formed by the side faces 28 of a stout-walled flat material part. In this case again the fixing of the position of the hinge axis in the horizontal direction can be taken over by the fastening screws 3.In the example of embodiment illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 the fastening element 2 is formed by a section of an angle profile and protuberances 29 of peg form formed by sheet metal punching are provided on the hinge flap leaf 5 of a hinge flap produced from a hinge profile, which protuberances in the assembly of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with bore apertures 30 arranged in the fastening element 2 and forming counterfaces. In this form of embodiment the protuberances 29 of peg form of the hinge flap leaf 5 take over the entire guidance and adjustment of the hinge flap leaf 5 and thus of the hinge axis 6, so that the fastening screws 3 are freed from guidance and adjustment tasks.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figures 10 to 12 there are provided tabs 32 angled off in relation to the abutment face 31 of the hinge flap leaf 5 and cut free from the two mutually opposite ends of a fastening element 2 of trestle form shaped from a sheet metal blank, which tabs in the assembling of the hinge fastening co-operate as guide faces with the end faces 33, forming counter-faces, of the hinge flap leaf 5. In this case, as may be seen especially from Figure 10, it can be provided that the making fast of the hinge axis 6 in the horizontal direction is guaranteed by the abutment of the end face 34 of the hinge flap 5 on the door post 1 of the vehicle bodywork.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figures 1 3 to 1 5 the fastening element 2 is detachably made fast on the door post 1 through a first set of threaded bolts 37. For the fixing of a specific orientation in relation to the door frame 1 the fastening element 2 is provided with extension pieces 48 of pin form forming guide faces which engage in corresponding bore apertures 49, forming counter-faces, of the wall of the door post 1 of the vehicle bodywork. The bolts 47 are here arranged directly mutually oppositely in relation to the longitudinal central axis of the hinge flap leaf 3, and outside the hinge flap leaf 3, and each penetrate approximately accurately dimensioned bores both in the fastening element 2 and in the door post 1.The guides 48/49 are arranged mutually diagonally oppositely on the fastening element 2 and in the door post 1 in relation to the longitudinal central axis of the hinge flap leaf 3.
The nuts 53 allocated to the bolts 47 are fitted as welded nuts on to the inside of the door post wall 1. The extensions 48 of pin form of the fastening element 2 are formed by simple piercings in the example of embodiment as shown.
For the adjustment of the vehicle door the hinge flap leaf 3 is made fast on the fastening element through a second set of bolts 54. Here the bolts 54 penetrate through apertures 56 in the hinge flap leaf 3 which have an excess dimension in relation to the diameter of the bolt shank 55. The apertures 56 have an approximately square form, the height and width of which is only slightly less than the interval of mutually opposite longitudinal edges of a bolt head 57 formed as hexagon. On the other hand the bolts 54 engage in nuts 58 secured expediently as welded nuts on the back of the fastening elements 2.
In order to preclude a variation of this adjusted position by unintentional slackening of the bolts 54, the hinge flap leaf 3 is made fast immovably on the fastening element 2 in its adjusted position by tack welding 59.
In the example of embodiment as illustrated in Figures 1 6 to 1 8 it is provided that in the removal of the vehicle door the hinge flap leaf 3 can be disengaged from the fastening element 2 and correspondingly the hinge flap leaf 3 is made fast disengageably on the fastening element 2 in a predetermined orientation by bolts 54 and means interengaging in shape-locking manner. The bolts 54 are arranged lying side by side in the longitudinal central plane of the hinge flap leaf 3 and the shape-lockingly interengaging means are arranged diagonally opposite to one another in relation to the hinge flap longitudinal axis. The means interengaging in shape-locking manner are formed by extension pieces 68 of pin form, forming guide faces, on the hinge flap leaf 3 and corresponding bores 69 forming countersurfaces in the fastening element 2.The extension pieces 68 of pin form can here be formed by simple piercings of the hinge flap leaf 3. The bolts 54 penetrate through corresponding bore apertures 60 and 61 in the hinge flap leaf 3 and in the fastening element 2 and engage in a nut 62, advantageously formed as welded nut, secured on the back of the fastening element 2. The fastening element 2 is made fast in a specific position corresponding to the adjusted position of the vehicle door through bolts 47 on the door post 1.
For the reaching by diminishing adjustments of the orientation of the fastening element 2 in relation to the door post 1, necessary for the adjusted position of the vehicle door, the apertures 71 in the fastening element 2 allocated to the shanks 70 of the bolts 47 have a diameter exceeding the shank diameter. The apertures 71 further have a square outline in all directions, which as regards its height and width is only slightly larger than the interval of mutually directly opposite edges of the threaded bolt head 72 formed as hexagon. The bolts 47 engage in nuts 73 made fast as welded nuts on the back of the door post wall. The fastening element 2 is additionally made fast on the door post 1 by a tack welding 74 so that even due to slackening of the bolts 47 by oversight there is no fear of detriment to the adjusted position of the vehicle door in renewed fitting.
