Abstract
205,884. Scott, J. P. July 25, 1922. Oxygen and hydrogen, generating; cells; electrolytes, heating; supporting electrodes.-A cell comprises a pair of rectangular cast-iron or steel frames, such as 11, Fig. 1, each divided into two parts by a bridgepiece 12, the two frames being insulated from one another and separated. in the upper part by an impermeable partition and in the lower part by a diaphragm, and enclosed by side plates, the lower of which support wire-gauze electrodes 43, spaced from the plate so as to be substantially in contact with the diaphragm. The bridge-pieces 12 are provided with a number of devices 33, shown in detail in Fig. 6, which allow the evolved gases to bubble up through water in the upper chamber for the purpose of washing, but prevent return flow of gas or electrolyte. Water is supplied to the upper chambers by a funnel 56 and is maintained at a predetermined level by overflow pipes 61 provided with bent ends 62 within the electrode chambers to prevent escape of gas. The bridge-pieces 12, being of heat-conducting material, allow pre-heating of the water in the upper chambers. The frames 11 and the bridge-pieces 12 are provided with pairs of flanges 13, 15 connected by webs 14, 16 which receive screws securing the side-plates, and insulated screws joining the frames. Taps 64 are provided at the bottom for removing sludge. Any number of cells may be connected in series or parallel by conductive strips or by contact of their side-plates.
