Abstract

155,457. Levin, I. H. Dec. 31, 1919. Cells; diaphragms; electrodes; electrolytes, circulating; oxygen and hydrogen, obtaining.-Apparatus wherein one electrode is formed by the cell and another is supported by, but insulated from, a cover is provided with an inverted troughshaped partition pendent from the cover and separating gas chambers above the electrolyte, which can flow from one side of the partition to the other through a hole near but below the surface of the liquid. The partition may support a diaphragm. Two or more such partitions f, Figs. 2 and 3, may be arranged so as to form separate chambers for one gas within a single chamber for the other gas. Partitions c rising from the cell floor are then provided to act as additional electrodes between the suspended electrodes d and diaphragms e, and may have apertures near the floor for liquid flow. Along one side of each of the inner gas chambers the partition f carries a trough g having open compartments on each side of the partitions. At one end of each trough compartment is an opening for electrolyte, while their other ends communicate by holes below the liquid level with a chamber f<4>, closed to both gas chambers and connected by a duct i with a supply cup h. Electrolyte passing from one compartment of the cell to the other is freed from gas while passing along the trough compartments. Ducts l lead from the inner gas chambers to an outlet k and gas washer k<1>; the two gas washers are connected to a liquid reservoir m. Each suspended electrode consists of a flattened sheet-metal cup d, perforated for circulation of liquid. It is suspended-by cross-pieces d<1> and stems d<2> from nuts d<3> which are clamped by insulated screws against insulating washers on the cover. Diaphragms e similar in form to the electrodes d are secured to the partitions f and troughs g. The cover b is provided with'a flange resting on insulating pieces at the bottom of a trough a<1> which contains oil, distilled water, or other non-conducting liquid. In modifications, the cover is clamped against compressible material, the liquid seal being dispensed with; the partition, instead of being integral with the cover, is formed by an inverted trough fitted in a hole in the cover, or carried bv the electrode stems below the cover; and each trough g may extend all round the inner gas chamber, being connected by studs. to the partition. Distilled water may be used for replenishing the alkaline electrolyte. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 12765/98, 21557/00, and 2124/12.
