Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-A retort is heated wholly or in part by outward radiation from a centrally disposed heated body such as a mass of refractory material. As shown in connection with an annular vertical retort b, more particularly adapted f o r low temperature distillation, combustion of gas and air supplied by a burner h is effected within a refractory cylinder a arranged in the internal flue of the retort. Repeated change of direction of the heating flame is provided for, advantageously by corrugating the exterior of the cylinder a and the internal flue of the retort as shown. The wall of the cylinder is formed with openings e, and a control of the heating is obtained by means of a vertically adjustable block c which controls the passage of the heating gases through these openings and their contact with the retort wall. In another construction the heating-gases pass vertically upwards through the cylinder a and then downwards between the cylinder and the retort wall. The temperature of the combustion products may be controlled by supplying air round the burner nozzle through a by-pass k.
