Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe Socket Arrangement with Sealing Means This invention relates to a pipe socket arrangement with sealing means. In particular it relates to a socketed pipe and to a pipe coupling member for socketless pipes.
A prior socketed pipe of the kind to which the present invention particularly relates is described in Dutch patent application no. 7702882. The prior socketed pipe comprises a sealing ring applied around the rim of the socket, said sealing ring being of substantially U-shaped crosssectional configuration and having an annular inner portion located within the socket and provided with means for sealingly receiving a pipe end inserted into said socket and an annular outer portion secured to the socket by fastening means forming a snap connection with a fastening groove extending circumferentially on the outside of the socket. This socketed pipe is made, for example of a suitable synthetic plastics material, and the sealing ring of an elastomeric material, e.g. rubber. This ring is laid on the rim of the socket, whereafter a sleeve-shaped fastening member is shifted over the sealing ring, which fastening member is provided on the inside with a projecting circumferential edge capable of making a snap connection with a groove formed on the outside of the socket. As the sealing ring is made of a material that is very easily deformable, it has in practice proved impossible for the ring to be applied on and within the socket in the correct position by automatic means. Therefore the sealing ring must be mounted manually. Such a manual operation is expensive and constitutes a disproportionately large part of the cost price of the product which for the rest is made fully automatically. In addition, a separate fastening member is required to keep the flexible sealing ring in its proper place when a pipe end is mounted in the socket end.Furthermore, the sleeve-shaped fastening member is easily damaged in its assembled position.
According to the present invention there is provided a pipe socket arrangement comprising a sealing ring applied around the rim of a socket, said sealing ring being of substantially U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and having an annular inner portion located within the socket and provided with means for sealingly receiving a pipe end inserted into said socket, and an annular outer portion, the socket having a groove extending circumferentially on the outside of the socket, wherein the annular outer portion of the sealing ring is secured to the socket by fastening means integral with the sealing ring and forming a snap-connection with said groove.Preferably, the fastening means comprises a circumferential ridge formed on the surface of said annular outer portion that faces the socket, said ridge engaging with the groove of the socket, and a rigid ring vulcanized in said annular outer portion adjacent said ridge, the inner diameter of said rigid ring being greater than the largest outer diameter of the socket between the fastening groove and the rim of the socket.
The connection of a sealing ring to a pipe socket can also be beneficially used with pipe coupling members for interconnecting two or more socket-less pipes, such as for example coupling sleeves and T-shaped pipe coupling elements. Each pipe receiving sleeve is then formed and provided with a sealing ring as described above.
A preferred embodiment of a socketed pipe ccording to the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a portion of a socketed pipe with a sealing ring in longitudinal sectional view.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a socketed pipe 1 consisting of a long cylindrical pipe 2 provided at an end with a socket 3, whose inner diameter is greater that the outer diameter of pipe 2. The socketed pipe is made, for example, of a synthetic plastics material, such as polyvinyl chloride. Formed on the outer circumference of socket 3 is a circumferential groove 4. Mounted around the rim of socket 3 is a sealing ring 5, made of an elastomeric material, such as rubber, and consisting of an annular inner portion 6 extending into the socket and an annular outer portion 7 positioned on the outside of the socket.
The annular inner portion is provided with circumferential ridges 8 and 9, extending inwardly and outwardly, respectively, and providing adequate sealing contact with the spigoted end of another pipe inserted into socket 3.
Annular outer portion 7 is provided with a circumferential ridge 10 extending in the direction of the annular inner porton 6, and having a crosssectional configuration complementary to that of groove 4. A rigid retaining ring 11, made for example of steel, is vulcanized in the annular outer portion 7. Sealing ring 5 can now be shifted over the rim of socket 3, with the combination of ridge and retaining ring 10, 1 1 functioning as a snap means with which the sealing ring is secured in groove 4. Retaining ring 1 1 is co-planar with ridge 10 of the annular outer portion 7, and the inner diameter of retaining ring 1 1 has been selected so that a considerable axial force must be exterted on the sealing ring to apply the latter around the rim of socket 3, the arrangement being such that the sealing ring cannot be pulled off socket 3 by hand. The annular outer portion 7 has a surface 12 extending substantially parallel to the retaining ring, and serving as a stop surface for the ram of a press to be used for mounting ring 5.
An advantage of the above embodiment is that the sealing ring is sufficiently stiff and easy to handle for the sealing ring to be applied to the socket end by automatic means. The rigid ring functions together with ridge formed on the annular outer portion of the sealing ring as a snap means which readily engages with the fastening groove formed in the outer circumference of the socket. In laying sewerage systems, a sealing ring thus secured cannot be pulled off the pipe socket by hand without great difficulty. If the introduction of a pipe end in the socket involves unexpected difficulties, practice has shown that such undesired removal can occur readily in the case of sealing rings secured by means of a separate snap-sleeve.
The invention can also be beneficially applied to accessories such as coupling sleeves by means of which two socket-less pipes can be interconnected, in which case the two ends of the sleeve are provided with a sealing ring, orTmembers for making side connections to a pipe.
The fastening groove 4 is of approximately saw tooth-shaped cross-sectional configuration, with the groove surface 13, which makes the larger acute angle with the axis of pipe 1, functioning as a etaining surface for sealing ring 5. The other groove surface makes a considerably smaller angle with the axis of the pipe. In this way, ridge 10 easily falls into groove 4 during mounting, and the position of groove surface 13 makes it difficult for sealing ring 5 to become accidentally dislodged. It is also possible, however, for groove surface 13 to be formed in socket 3 with a slight undercut.
