Abstract

A surgical dressing comprises an absorbent pad disposed between a top sheet which is pervious to liquids and a porous fibrous backing sheet which has been treated with a fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent to eliminate strike-through of the dressing by body fluids and to retard passage of bacteria through the dressing while at the same time providing breathability of the dressing to promote healing of the wound.

Description

SPECIFICATION Surgical dressing This invention relates to surgical dressings of the kind comprising an absorbent pad interposed between a top sheet which is pervious to liquids and a porous fibrous backing sheet.
Such surgical dressings are required to absorb body fluids emanating from the wound on which they are used but to prevent strike-through, i.e. passage of the body fluids completely through the dressing. Although this can be accomplished by simply placing a sheet of liquid impervious plastics material over the back of the dressing, this expedient is not satisfactory since it also prevents passage of gases such as air to and from the wound through the dressing, thus interfering with the healing process.
Numerous efforts have been made to satisfy these conflicting requirements, but although it has been possible to prevent passage of liquid while at the same time retaining breathability, that is, capability of passing air and other gases, the surgical dressings hitherto available having these properties also permit passage of bacteria through the dressing with attendant risk of infection of the dressed wound.
It has now been found if the backing sheet of a dressing of the above kind is treated with a fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent the dressing is not only free from strike-through and provides breathability but passage of bacteria through the dressing is also retarded. When water is applied to a backing sheet so treated the water forms free standing droplets on the surface of the sheet which do not pass into or through the dressing in the absence of applied pressure.
The invention accordingly provides a surgical dressing comprising an absorbent pad interposed between a top sheet which is pervious to liquid and a porous fibrous backing sheet, which has been treated with a fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent.
Two embodiments of surgical dressing according to the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the-accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away, showing the first embodiment, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view, partly broken away, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1,and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view corresponding to that in Fig. 2 showing the other embodiment.
The surgical dressing 10 shown in Figs. 1-3 includes an absorbent pad 12, a liquid-pervious top sheet 14 intended to be placed in contact with the skin and wound and a porous backing sheet 16. The pad 12 has a front surface 18, a back surface 20, side edges 22 and end edges 24. The pad 12 may be constructed from any suitable material, such for example as a mass of cellulosic fibres formed by comminuting wood pulp and known as wood fluff.
The backing sheet 16 covers the back surface 20 of the pad 12 and has lateral side margins 26 folded over the side edges 22 of the pad 12. The top sheet 14 has opposed side margins 28 which are folded around the back surface 30 of the backing sheet 16 and the portions 32 of which are secured together by suitable means, such as adhesive, beneath the back surface 30 of the backing sheet 16. The top sheet 14 accordingly extends completely around the dressing to provide a soft, conformable and aesthetically pleasing surface for the dressing. The top sheet 14 may be made of any suitable material, such as nonwoven material, and its front surface 34 should be nonadherent to the wound of a patient. The top sheet 14 is preferably made of the polyester-rayon nonwoven material, known as micrexed Novonette SP 117, supplied by The Kendall Company, Boston, Massachusetts.Opposed end margins 36 and 38, of the top sheet 14 and of the backing sheet 16, respectively, are secured together by suitable means, such as adhesive sealing, in order to close the ends of the dressing.
The backing sheet 16 is made from any suitable fibrous material and may be made of the same nonwoven material as that employed for the top sheet 14.
The backing sheet 16 is treated, prior to incorporation in the dressing, with fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent, such for example the aqueous dispersion of fluoropolymer sold as Zonyl NWG or NWK by Du Pont or that sold as Scotchban FC-824 by 3M Company. If desired, an aqueous dispersion of a thermosetting resin such as that sold as Sunsize 16 by Sun Chemical Corporation may be applied to the backing sheet in addition to the fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent by mixing the two aqueous dispersions together in any desired proportions.
The backing sheet 16 can be treated with fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent by any convenient process, for example by immersing the backing sheet in the aqueous dispersion and then passing the sheet through squeeze rolls. The dispersion can also be applied by pad rolls or by spraying.
When a thermosetting resin is applied as a part of the treatment, the treated sheet must be heated, e.g.
at 240 F. for one minute or at higher temperature for a shorter time, to cure the resin to the thermoset condition. The amount of fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent applied can vary considerably; in general, amounts from 0.1 to 3% by weight based on the dry weight of the sheet are effective. The textile finish is preferably applied in the form of an aqueous dispersion containing 10-50% by weight of solids.
The second embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 4 was prepared as described above except that a second layer 40 identical to the backing sheet 16 and treated with fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent in the same manner as the backing sheet 16 was included between the backing sheet 16 and the pad 12.
Dressings constructed as shown in the drawing are breathable, permitting passage of air and other gases through the dressing, but are impervious to aqueous liquids such as the blood and plasma seeping from a wound. Moreover, they retard the passage of-bacteria through the dressing under test conditions which caused bacteria to penetrate com pletelythrough control dressings which were identical to those described above except that the treatment of the backing sheet or sheets with a fluorocarbon textile finish water repellent agent was omitted.
