Abstract
Disposable product for example a diaper having a hydrophobic layer (12) formed of non-woven polyethylene or polypropylene fibres, a hydrophobic tissue wadding (16, 18) above and below, or preferably wrapped around, an absorbent pad (14) and a water-proof backing sheet (20) of plastic film secured at its edges (22) to the top layer (12).
Description
This invention relates to disposable products, such as diapers, sanitary pads, or underpads, and more particularly to a disposable product having a wet strength hydrophobic tissue wadding for preventing fluid wetback while maintaining the shape of the absorbent pad.
Disposable diapers having an absorbent pad formed of a core of wood fluff or: like material are well known. These pads have been used with and provided with a tissue wadding which, in the past, has been of highly fluid permeable and fluid absorbent material. Waddings have been used to wrap the absorbent pad, but the tissue wadding when wet looses strength and, in use, the pad often loses its shape and its absorbing qualities, and permits an unwanted degree of fluid wetback.
Attempts have been made to provide a barrier to the fluid wetback, such as the barrier layer shown in the patent to John Michael Hernandez, No. 3,987,792, for Disposable Diaper Having Improved Liquid Retention. However, the hydrophobic fibres of the barrier layer of this prior patent form a relatively thick resilient fibrous pad and because of the resistance to penetration by fluids which is present, a water pervious top layer having fluid feeding openings therein
- 2 48798 must also be used.
The present invention overcomes the difficulties of the prior art and achieves the results desired by providing a disposable product including both a hydrophobic non-woven top sheet and a tissue wadding preferably a thin wadding e.g. a tissue thin wadding, which is wrapped about the absorbent pad so that the tissue wadding being of hydrophobic nature tends to retain its full strength even after fluid has passed into the absorbent pad and cooperated with the top sheet in preventing fluid wetback, thus providing a dry surface in contact with the skin of the user.
Accordingly, the primary object of the present invention is to provide a disposable diaper having means to retain the shape of the absorbent pad and which reduces fluid wetback.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a disposable diaper which provides a high degree of resistance to fluid wetback yet does not require a thick barrier layer, thereby providing an increased amount of absorbing material while limiting the bulk and size of the diaper.
According to the present invention a disposable product comprises a hydrophobic top sheet formed of non-woven fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or mixtures thereof, a hydrophobic wadding of a tissue formed of non-woven fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or mixtures thereof, an absorbent pad, and a waterproof backing sheet, the said wadding being wrapped around the said absorbent pad holding the said pad together.
The invention may be put into practice in various ways and two specific embodiments will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
- 3 58
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of an embodiment of a diaper constructed according to the present invention, with parts being broken away to show other parts in detail;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken along the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1 illustrating the invention with the tissue wadding wrapped about the pad.
Reference numeral 10 is used to generally designate a disposable diaper constructed in accordance with the present invention. The diaper comprises, in order, a top sheet 12 formed of non-woven hydrophobic fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or a mixture thereof. This layer is water pervious, but not water absorbing, and permits passage of waste fluid towards the absorbent pad 14, which is separated from the top sheet 12 by part 16 of a tissue wadding 26 of hydrophobic non-woven fibres, of polyethylene or polypropylene, or a mixture thereof.
Another part 18 of the wadding 26 lies beneath the pad 14 between it and a... water impervious backing sheet 20 formed of a suitable synthetic plastic material, such as polyethylene film (see Figure 2). The tissue wadding 26 is wrapped about the pad 14 and provides increased support to the pad 14 and assists in assuring its shape. The backing sheet is folded over the edges of the top sheet 12 at 22 and secured thereto to hold the diaper in assembled condition. Adhesives, heat sealing, embossing or other means may be used for assembly purposes. The core 14 is preferably formed of a wood fluff or tissue layers of paper-like material, which are highly absorbent. This material, when subjected to stress, will readily distort.
The wrapped wadding 26 maintains the shape of the pad by providing a high strength wrapping because this hydrophobic material has a very good degree of wet strength and in fact does not absorb fluid, thereby not becoming weakened
- 4 48758 by the passage of fluid therethrough. The hydrophobic material resists fluid wetback and in conjunction with the hydrophobic top sheet achieves a high degree of resistance to fluid wetback, even though the material will readily allow fluid to pass through it into the pad 14. This is because the wadding being made of hydrophobic fibres, unlike the tissue waddings of the prior art, does not absorb fluid.
Claims (4)

A disposable product comprising a hydrophobic top sheet formed of non-woven fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or mixtures thereof, a 10 hydrophobic wadding of tissue formed of non-woven fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or mixtures thereof, an absorbent pad, and a waterproof backing sheet, the said wadding being wrapped around the said absorbent pad and holding the said pad together.
2. A disposable product as claimed in Claim 1 in which the said backing sheet is an imperforate plastic film.
3. A product as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in the form of a diaper.
4. A disposable diaper as claimed in Claim 3 substantially as specifically described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
