Cutting slices in succession.-In a slicing- machine, a gear-box C is made integral with the frame A and contains bevel-gearing for actuating the knife and reciprocating carriage. A boss D, stiffened by ribs E, accommodates a footstep bearing comprising a ball G, hard steel plate H<1>, adjusting screw H and lock-nut, J. The shaft F, which is recessed to receive the ball G, passes through a bearing N in the spigoted gear-box cover K and is provided with a table-reciprocating crank P. A projecting portion Q of the gear-box receives a bearing R for the hand-wheel shaft S. The bearing R may be aligned in the gear-box by packing thin metal plates around its exterior and is secured by the bolt T, lock-nut Z and washer A<1>. A bearing for the knife-driving shaft D<1> is also provided. In a modification, the gear-box is closed by a bottom cover, the boss D being formed on the cover.
