Description
SPECIFICATION
Patch Top Closure Means The use of membrane type closures for a container is well known in the patented prior art, as evidenced, for example, by the patents to Stec No. 3,434,651 and Christensson No. 3,776,450.
In the Serritella Patent No. 3,800,999, a disposable lid is disclosed containing score lines that define a removable portion for access to the interior of a container, and the Beckers Patent No. e,942,676 discloses a foil closure member containing a removable portion.
One problem of the known patch top closure members is that of accurately removing only a predetermined portion of the closure member, whereby a dispensing opening of desired size and configuration will be defined in the residual portion of the closure member which remains mounted on the container end. Thus, in the case of certain composite containers designed to hold granular materials, such as salt, sugar, instant coffee or the like, it may be desired to provide an access opening of a size to permit the introduction of a spoon within the container, the edge of the opening being flat to serve as means against which the spoon is scraped to level the removed contents in the bowl portion of the spoon. In other instances, it may be desired to define a pour opening of a desired configuration in the patch top closure member through which granular container contents are poured in a controlled manner, or, in the case of relatively large container contents such as croutons, to provide a relatively large dispensing opening. A further problem is that of preventing peeling of the residual portion of the patch top from the container during the removal of the pull tab and removable portions.
The present invention was developed to avoid the above and other drawbacks of the known membrane-type closure members.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved patch top closure member for composite containers or the like including a body portion mounted on the open end of a container, a pull tab portion connected with the peripheral edge of the body portion, and means including at least one first cut, notch, slot or the like contained in the juncture between the body and tab portions for defining in the body portion a predetermined removable portion, whereby a dispensing opening of desired size and configuration is formed in the residual body portion that remains mounted on the container after the pull tab and removable body portions have been torn away.
first embodiment.
In accordance with a more specific object of the invention, a cut, slot or notch is provided in at least one juncture between the tab and body portions for initiating the tearing of the tab and removable body portions from the residual body portion. In the preferred embodiment, a single tear-initiating cut is provided in a juncture between symmetrically or asymmetrically arranged pull tab and body portions, which pull tab is pulled laterally to tear the pull tab and removable portions from the residual body openings. In this embodiment, the body portion may include a depending annular skirt portion that is connected with the reversely outwardly folded end portion of the container member. In a second embodiment, the pull tab and body portions are symmetrically arranged to define a pair of junctures each of which contains a tearinitiating cut.In this second embodiment, the tab portion is pulled upwardly to tear the removable portion away from the residual body portion along converging lines of tear. In this embodiment, the closure member is generally planar and normally does not include the annular skirt portion of the In accordance with another object of the invention, the body portion of the closure member may contain one or more scorelines that more accurately define the line or lines of tear.
According to a further object of the invention, the peripheral edge of the body portion may contain a second cut or notch at the other end of the line of tear from the tear-initiating cut, thereby to prevent peeling of the residual body portion of the closure member from the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure member of the type described above including a protective synthetic plastic overcap member which, when the pull tab portion is bent downwardly, is fitted upon the outwardly reversely folded end portion of the composite container member.
In accordance with another object of the invention, the patch top may be mounted upon the container by means of an hermetic bond (for example, an adhesive bond, a thermallyresponsive bond or the like), and/or by heat shrinking, crimping or clinching an annular skirt portion of the patch top to the reversely curled end portion of the composite body wall of the container. The patch top is formed from a flexible sheet material, such as aluminum foil, paper, a layer of synthetic plastic material or the like.
While the adhesive could be in the form of a liquid (such as an epoxy), preferably it is in the form of a layer of heat-sensitive material (such as polyethylene, ionomer vinyl acetate, polypropylene, or crystalline isotactic polypropylene) formed as a laminate with the sheet material. Other suitable adhesive materials are extrudable hot melt, and vinyl copolymers.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification when viewed in the light of the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a first embodiment of the partial opening closure member of the invention including a symmetrically arranged pull tab and a pair of tear-initiating cuts; Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of the first embodiment taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 1 with the pull tab and removable body portions torn away; Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a modification of the first embodiment in its unopened and opened conditions, respectively; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a modification of the embodiment of Figs. 4 and 5, wherein the body portion of the patch top closure member is waffled to impart greater strength and rigidity;Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate another embodiment of the invention in the closed and open conditions, respectively, only a single tear-initiating cut being provided to permit lateral tearing of the pull tab and removable body portions from the residual body portion; Fig. 9 is an exploded detailed elevational view illustrating the closure member of Figs. 7 and 8 provided with a protective synthetic overcap member; Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken along the line 10-10 of Fig. 9; Figs. 11 and 12 illustrate, in the closed and open conditions, respectively, a preferred modification of the embodiment of Figs. 7 and 8; and Fig. 13 illustrates a modification of the closure member of Figs. 7 and 8 wherein the pull tab and body portions are symmetrically arranged.
Detailed Description Referring first more particularly to Figs. 1-3, in the first embodiment of the invention the planar patch top closure member 2 is formed of flexible sheet material (such as aluminum foil, paper, a synthetic plastic material or the like) and includes a pull tab portion 4 that extends outwardly from the peripheral edge of the generally disk-shaped body portion 6. The pull tab portion 4 is coplanar with and symmetrically arranged relative to the body portion 6, thereby defining a pair of junctures each of which contains a tear-initiating cut, slot or notch 8.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 2, the body portion 6 of the closure member 2 is bonded in hermetically sealed relation to the reversely curled end portion 11 of a composite container member 10 by a layer 18 of conventional bonding material. Preferably the bonding material comprises a layer of heat-sensitive material, such as polyethylene or a vinyl copolymer, that is laminated to or coated upon the sheet material of the patch top, although the adhesive could be an extrudable hot melt, a conventional liquid adhesive, or the like. Thus, the hermetic patch top bond could be either a liquid adhesive bond, or a heat-sealed bond.As is known in the art, the composite container includes an outer label layer 12 (of foil, paperboard, foil-paper laminate or the like), a fibrous body wall layer 14 (of paperboard, for example), and an impervious inner liner layer 16 (of aluminum foil, for example). Owing to the reversely curled end 11 of the composite body wall, the planar closure member 2 is bonded to the liner layer 16 of the container 10 by the bonding layer 18. The bonding material 18 could be coated upon the inner surface of the impervious liner layer 16, if desired.
As shown in Fig. 3, upon upward pulling of the symmetrical pull tab portion 4 of the closure member 2 away from the container 10, an initial tearing of the body portion 6 of the closure member 2 is produced commencing at the first cuts 8. Thus, when the pull tab portion 4 is pulled upwardly away from the container, two lines of tear 20, 22 initiating at the slots 8 converge to a point 24 at the peripheral edge of the closure body portion diametrically opposite the tab portion. Residual portions 6a, 6b of the body portion 6 of the patch top closure member remain bonded to the container open end to define a pour opening 26 for dispensing the contents of the container.A removable synthetic plastic overcap (not shown) may be provided as is known in the art, in which case the pull tab 4 is initially folded either backwardly upon the upper surface of the body portion, or downwardly against the outer surface of the composite body wall 10. If desired, a second cut (not shown) could be provided in the peripheral edge of the body portion at the point of convergence 24, thereby to prevent peeling of the adjacent edges of the residual portions 6a and 6b from the container.
in the modification of Figs. 4 and 5, the closure member 2 is provided with a pair of converging score lines 28 associated with the first cuts 8', respectively, to more particularly define the removable and residual portions 6c and 6d, respectively, of the body portion 6' of the planar closure member 2'. The score lines 28 converge toward a point 29 spaced inwardly from the peripheral edge of the body portion, whereby when the pull tab 4' is pulled away from the container 10, the body portion 6' is initially torn at the slots 8' and then severed along score lines 28 to define the dispensing opening 30, as shown in Fig. 5.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 6, the body portion 32 of the planar closure member 34 is provided with a plurality of waffle-defining deformations 36, which deformations provide improved overall strength to the closure member. The deformations are arranged so that the cuts 38 at the junctures between the tab and body portions 40 and 32, respectively, are in alignment with a pair of perpendicular deformations, so that upon upward pulling of the tab portion 40 away from the container, tearing of the body portion 32 at the slots 38 is initiated and the removable portion is severed along the pair of perpendicular deformations which converge at a point of intersection 42, thereby defining the removable and residual portions 32a and 32b, respectively, of the closure body portion. The width of the tab portion 40 determines the location of the tearinitiating cuts 38, which in turn determine those pair of deformations along which the body portion will be severed, thereby defining the size and configuration of the dispensing opening.
Figs. 7-10 illustrate another embodiment of the closure member of the present invention, wherein the tab portion 50 of the closure member 51 is asymmetrically arranged or offset relative to the body portion. Since one side of the tab portion 50 merges with the circumferential edge of the body portion 52, only one juncture is formed that contains a first tear-initiating cut, slit or notch 54.
In this embodiment, the patch top closure member 51 includes an annular skirt portion 51 a that is clinched or crimped upon the reversely outwardly bent end portion 11 of the container member 10, as shown in Fig. 9. The container is provided with a conventional protective synthetic plastic overcap 55, as is known in the art.
To open the container of Figs. 9 and 10, the plastic overcap 55 is removed and the pull tab is lifted upwardly to the horizontal position of Fig. 7, whereby the pull tab 50 is pulled laterally to initiate tearing of the body portion at cut 54.
Further pulling of the pull tab causes removable portion 52b to be torn from the residual portion to define the dispensing opening 56. If desired, a peripheral cut 57 may be provided at the other end of the line of tear to prevent peeling of the residual body portion 52a from the container.
As shown in the preferred modification of Fig.
11, preferably the body portion 52' is provided with a score line 58 that more accurately defines the line of tear between the residual and removable body portions 52a' and 52b', respectively.
In the modification of Fig. 13, the pull tab portion 70 is symmetrically arranged relative to the body portion 72, only a single cut 74 being provided in one of the two junctures between the pull tab and body portions. As in the embodiments of Figs. 7-12, the pull tab portion 70 is pulled laterally to initiate tearing at the cut 74 and along the line of tear 76 to tear the removable body portion 72b from the residual body portion 72a. A peripheral cut 78 may be provided at the end of the line of tear to prevent peeling of the residual body portion from the container. If desired, the line of tear 76 may be scored for a more accurate tearing operation. In this embodiment, the axis of the pull tab 70 is arranged at the acute angle alpha to the line of tear 76.
While the patch top closure embodiments of Figs. 7-13 are preferably provided with annular skirt portions, it is apparent that these skirt portions might be omitted, if desired. Similarly, if desired, the embodiments of Figs. 1-6 could be provided with annular skirt portions. In the embodiments provided with annular skirt portions, the peripheral edge portion of the diskshaped body portion is normally bonded to the adjacent extremity of the outwardly reversely folded end portion of the container body member. The annular skirt portion is clinched or crimped concentrically upon the outer surface of the reversely folded end portion 11.
While in accordance with the provisions of the Patent Statutes the preferred forms and embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made in the described closure members without deviating from the inventive concepts set forth above.

Closure means as defined in claim 1, wherein said tab portion is asymmetrically arranged relative to said body portion and includes on one side an outer peripheral edge portion which is tangential to the peripheral edge of said body portion, said tab portion containing on its other side a single juncture between said tab portion and said body portion, said juncture containing said first cut.
5. Closure means as defined in claim 4, wherein said closure member includes a score line extending from said first cut to the opposite edge of said peripheral body portion to define a line of tear between said removable and body portions.
6. Closure means as defined in claim 4, wherein the peripheral edge of said body portion contains a second cut at the opposite end of the line of tear from said first slot.
7. Closure means as defined in claim 1, wherein said tab portion is symmetrically arranged relative to said body portion to define a pair of junctures on opposite sides of said tab portion.
8. Closure means as defined in claim 7, wherein only one of said junctures contains a first cut, whereby upon lateral pulling of the pull tab away from said first cut, said tab and removable body portions are torn away from the residual body portion along a line of tear that extends at an acute angle relative to the axis of said pull tab portion.
9. Closure means as defined in claim 1, wherein said container member is of tubular configuration and includes, in concentrically arranged layers, an impervious inner liner layer, a fibrous body wall layer, and an outer label layer, said container body one end being reversely outwardly curled so that said inner liner layer faces and is in engagement with said patch top closure member; and further wherein said patch top body portion includes an annular peripheral skirt portion that is connected concentrically about the reversely curled portion of said container body.
10. Closure means as defined in claim 9, wherein said tab portion is bent downwardly against the outer surface of said container member.
11. Closure means as defined in claim 9, and further including a synthetic plastic overcap member having an annular portion mounted concentrically on said reversely curled end portion in protective relation above said patch top member.
12. Closure means as defined in claim 1, wherein said container member is of tubular configuration and includes, in concentrically arranged layers, an impervious inner liner layer, a fibrous body wall layer, and an outer label layer, said container member one end being reversely curled so that said inner liner layer faces and is in bonded engagement with said patch top closure member.
13. Closure means as defined in claim 12, wherein said patch top member is bonded to said inner liner layer by a bonding material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, extrudable hot melt, gel lacquer and a vinyl copolymer.
14. Closure means as defined in claim 1, wherein said patch top closure member is bonded in hermetically sealed relation with said container body.
15. Closure means as defined in claim 14, wherein said closure member is adhesively bonded with said container body by a liquid adhesive.
16. Closure means as defined in claim 15, wherein said closure member is bonded with said container body by a heat-responsive bonding material.
17. Closure means as defined in claim 7, wherein each of said junctures contains a first cut, whereby said tab and removable body portions are torn from the residual body portion along converging lines of tear.
18. Closure means as defined in claim 17, wherein said body portion contains a pair of converging score lines in alignment with each of said first cuts, respectively, thereby to define the lines of tear between the removable and residual body portions.
19. Closure means as defined in claim 18, wherein said score lines converge at a point spaced from the peripheral edge of said body portion.
20. Closure means as defined in claim 19, wherein said patch top closure member is generally planar.
21. Closure means as defined in claim 17, wherein said body portion contains a plurality of deformations arranged to define a waffled configuration, said deformations being arranged perpendicular to one another and extending toward the peripheral edge of said closure member, respectively.
22. Closure means as defined in claim 21, wherein said first cuts at the junctures between said tab and body portions are in alignment with a perpendicular pair of said deformations, respectively, whereby the width of said tab portion determines the perpendicular pair of said deformations along which the removable body portion is torn away from the residual body portion.
