Abstract

A safety device for load lifting and lowering apparatus of the kind comprising a pair of parallel spaced apart upright guide members (10) of hollow section along each of which travels a runner (12) supporting, via a support passing through a slot (11) a load carrier, a driving cable being connected to each runner to raise and lower it, comprises a pair of pawls (14) pivoted on the runner (12) and a block (19) slidable relative to the pawls and carrying a shaft (22) to which the cable is connected. A pair of levers (35, 36) pivotally mounted on a shaft (37) secured to the pawls (14) are each connected by a pin-and-slot connection (38, 40) to the block (19). Each pawl (14) has a tapered edge (17) providing a recess (42) in which a roller (41), in normal operation, rests since tension in the cable separates the block (19) from the runner (12) and maintains the levers (35, 36) in the position shown. When the tension is released, springs (23, 24) urge the block (19) towards the runner (12) thereby rotating the levers (35, 36) and moving the roller (41) upwardly so that the pawls (14) are jammed against the walls of the guide member (10). <IMAGE>
