The present invention has'lor its objects to provide a simply constructed machine of the character whereby the movement of a cable for snubbing logs on an inclined plane is controlled; to provide a snubbing machine having a series of drums and pulleys-upon which a snubbing` cable is threaded whereby the cable is controlled; to providey in a snub-y bing machine, a series of drums and a series oi pulleys mounted upon an inclined support, whereby the snubbing cable is guided upon said drums; to provide, in a snubbing machine, a pair of drums over which the snubbing cable operates and means for braking one oi said drums and releasing 'the other drum automatically and vice versa; to provide, in a snubbing machine, a drum shaft and means for controlling the rotation of said shaft; and to provide, in one embodi-y ment of my invention, ameans :tor manually operating the machine.

52 designate brake bands, one end of each of which is held aroundthe shafts 5l as at and the other end 54 is carried by rods 55 which pass through slots 56 in the cross beam 33 and are pivoted at 57 to a lever 5S which is tulcrumed at 59 on a bolt G0. The bolt G0 passes into the beam 33 in which it is guided and a spring 61. serves to thrust the bolt 60 up to thereby hold the lever 5S with its tulcrum 59 in position. The lever 58 passes through a guide 62 having pin holes 63 through which a stop or holding, pin 6% (see Figure l) maybe passed to maintain the lever in its tilted positions.
At the. front of the machine are horizontal guide rolls 65 and vertical guide rolls 66 suitably mounted to guide the cable to the drums 37. i
In the embodiment of my invention just described, the cable passes over one of the guide rolls G5, thence between a pair ot' guide rolls 66, thence around a drum 37, thence alternately around the grooves of the drum G and the pulleys 3l and back over the second drum 37 and thence between the second pair of guide rolls 66 and over the second horizontal guide roll 65.
In Figures G to 9', inclusive, I have shown another embodiment of my invention. In those figures the parts having the same 'tunetion and being of the same general construction as corresponding parts in the preceding figures7 bear the same reference number plus the index letter .X. In thisv form of the invention, the brake bands 52X have one end fastened to a rod 67 from which they pass up over the hubs 68 of the rollers 60X,
thence down around the brake hubs 38X, the other ends being secured to the rods 55X. The lever 58X also is held by an upper spring 6l and a lower spring G12 it having its tulcrum on rods GOX between the two springs G8 and 61X. In this form also two drums (3X-(3X are employed as in my patent before referred to.` Each drum has grooved brake disks 7X around which the brake band 21- is passed, the band 21X having its end anchored at (3E) and being drawn taut to apply friction whenever lever 12X is pushed down by pressure of rod 8X on the band 21X between the two disks 7 X.
Provision may also be made 'tor operating the drums 6X by hand, it desired. This can be accomplished by providing one oit them with a gear 70 and providing a pinion 7 2 on a sliding crank shatt 71 (slidable endwise in bearings 73) so as to mesh or unmesh the gears TO-72.y on stub shafts' 74 on a stepped support 2T- In this form of the invention the cable is threaded between a pair of horizontal guide rolls (35X, then between a pair et vertical guide rolls 66X. around one of the drums 37X, then wound alternately over the drums 6"- GX, everyT other pass ot the cable aroiind the right hand drum 6X being continued around one of the pulleys 31X as best shown .in Figure 6, the cable continuing from the lett hand drum 6X over the other drum 37X, thence between the adjacent pair ot vertical guide rolls 66X and thence between the other pair ol. horizontal guide i'olls 65X.
Referring again to the preferred embodiment ot my invention (Figures l to 5, inelusive) it will be seen that in order to lower a heavy load down a steep incline, the machine being anchored at the top et a steep pitch or hill.y through the bail 3 the load is applied to either end of the cable 75 at the front oit the machine. This portion or side of the cable then becomes what I shall hereinafter term the tight cable. The opposite end of the cable. I shall hereafter terni the "slack cable as it is slack except tor its own weight. 'lhe operator. with the lever 5S, applies tension to the bar under leverage with a fulcrum at to tighten the friction belt, strap or band tending to retard the movement ot the sheave 37 at the side on which the slack cable lies, by friction over the brake hub 38. As the shait 3G is not movable up and down, the tension on the brake band 52 tends to draw the roller 50 and drum 37 together. j

9. ln a snubbing machine, a plurality ot sets of drums, a plurality ot pulleys, a cable threaded around the rdrums land pulleys, means for supporting said pulleys in inclined positions relative to said drums and friction rollers acting directly on and in cooperation with certain of said drums to Form a combined braking and releasing means.

In a snubbing machine wherein is provided a `frame, main brake drums and sheaves over which a cable is threaded and wherein is'provided means for applying a braking force to said main drum to retard the progress of the cable; a cable guiding and tension means through which the entering and leaving ends of the cable" are threaded, said guiding and tension means comprising a support, auxiliary drums on said suppoitoverwhich the cable ends pass, sliding frames on the support, pressure rollers carried by said sliding frames and adapted to hold the cable in contact with the respective auxiliary drums,.means for yieldingly holding said rollers towards their. respective drums, and guide rollers for the outgoing and incoming ends of the cable.
