Abstract
A portion of an image of an object produced by the objective lens e.g. in single lens reflex cameras, is projected onto image sensors (CTD 1, CTD 2) using homologous microprism grids arranged in an enantiomorphic fashion parallel to each other. A pulse generator (3) produces a common pulse train of frequency fA for read-out of the image sensors, which are or utilise charge transfer devices. The output signals of the sensors (CTD 1, CTD 2) are fed to a differential amplifier (4) which forms a lens-setting signal from the difference in brightness between them. The difference signal, integrated over one or more line periods, has a minimum value when the range setting of the objective lens is correct. The output signal is fed to an integrator (5), and used to drive a display means in the case of semi-automatic range setting so that manual range setting can be effected by watching the display whilst adjusting the objective lens. In a fully automatic arrangement a lens drive starts from the lens close-up position and adjusts the lens to remoter setting until a first minimum is detected, whereafter a fine setting can be carried out. <IMAGE>
