Abstract

In a gauge for detecting or measuring cross-sectional dimensions or deviations from a predetermined shape or cross-sectional dimension of an elongate object (4), in which a light source (2) directs a coil mated beam of light onto objects 4 as they pass through a tubular housing, and an assembly of photo diodes (8, 9) receives images of boundary portions of the illuminated moving objects and produces electrical signals from which the parameters to be detected or measured can be derived, the housing and optical apparatus is rotated about an axis concentric with the path to be taken by the object. The source 2 may be continuous or pulsed, and the objects may be metal rods or bars. <IMAGE>
