Abstract

A press has a vertical ram including a ram head (3) mounted with vertical play on a nut (4) on the actuating rod. Fluid pressure operated balancing cylinders (19) serve to balance the weight of the ram head (3) and a replaceable tool carried thereby. Replacement of the tool causes unbalancing of the ram head (3) and control means are provided for automatically restoring the balanced condition. The control means includes a contact lever pivotally mounted on the ram head and engaging with its ones end the actuating rod nut or a part attached thereto. Relative movement of the ram head (3) and the nut (4) causes pivoting of the contact lever (1) whereupon the other end of the lever operates one of the control members (5,6) to control the supply of the fluid to the balancing cylinder (19) in a manner appropriate to restoration of the balanced condition. Closing of the inlet valve 8 is delayed by a member 14 to achieve overbalance so that the ram 3 does not drop when a brake is released. <IMAGE>
