Abstract

A load-sensing valve assembly for a motor vehicle air pressure braking system includes a member such as a diaphragm 12 which is displaceable by a signal pressure at an inlet 15 from a braking valve to actuate through a pivoted beam 13, a valve 14 operable to control the flow of pressure air from the inlet 15 to an outlet 16 and hence to the brakes and means 24 responsive to the vehicle load for displacing the fulcrum 20 of the beam to modify its effective leverage. The valve assembly is provided with locking means comprising knurled surfaces 40 on a carriage 22 and 33 engageable in response to the supply of pressure fluid to the valve assembly lifting the beam 13 to prevent further displacement of the fulcrum of the beam so avoiding an imbalanced braking effect due to for example an increase in the load on one axle during vehicle braking. A modified valve includes a dashpot acting on the forked lever 24 to prevent carriage oscillations. <IMAGE>
